Learn about security fundamentals in Microsoft Office programs and what you can do to help protect your computer and documents. Find out about digital signatures, some basic information about macros and viruses, and how to create strong passwords to help protect your documents.

GOALS

After completing this course you will be able to:

  • Create robust passwords and password-protect documents in Microsoft® Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Understand the importance of using antivirus software.
  • Define what a macro is and set macro security levels to protect against viruses.
  • Check a digital signature to see if a macro was created by someone you can trust.

Worried about computer viruses? Does the mention of malicious macros scare you? Is there a way to protect yourself from these things?

Security has a very high prominence and many people worry about whether their computers are secure. This course will introduce you to the basics of security in Office and give you some resources you can go to for more information.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

The lessons in this course cover security principles for all Office programs. However, the practice sessions use Microsoft Word 2003 and Microsoft Excel 2003. You'll need to have these programs installed on your computer to complete the practices.

Lessons two and three in this course are also in Help secure and protect data in Excel.
