  • If you want to make only a minor customization to a layout, such as removing a placeholder, modify an existing layout, and then rename it.

To rename a layout, in Slide Master view, right-click it, and then click Rename Layout on the shortcut menu. Enter the new name in the Layout name box in the Rename Layout dialog box.

You can also duplicate the layout that you want to modify before changing it so that you have a copy of the original. To duplicate a layout, in Slide Master view, right-click the layout, and then click Duplicate Layout on the shortcut menu.

  • If your company doesn't have a logo, you can put a shape, such as an oval or a star, on the slide master and then insert a picture or piece of clip art into the shape to quickly create a logo.
  • If you want something, such as text or a picture, to appear on all of your slides in the same location, add it to the slide master.
  • If you are including copies of your slides along with other documents, such as a letter, you can change the orientation of your slide from landscape to portrait so your readers don't have to rotate the handout to read your sides.

To change the orientation of a slide, in Slide Master view, on the Slide Master tab, in the Page Setup group, click Slide Orientation, and then click Portrait or Landscape.

  • Rearranging placeholders is a good way make some placeholders more visible. For example, you might want to move the date footer up into a more visible place if you are creating a time-sensitive presentation. To move a placeholder, click its border, and when the pointer becomes a four-headed arrow Four-headed arrow, drag the placeholder to a new position.
  • You can add an effect, such as a shadow or glow, to a picture. Select the picture, and then, under Picture Tools, on the Format tab, in the Picture Styles group, click Picture Effects, and then click the effect that you want to add.
  • You can change the picture frame. Select the picture, and then, under Picture Tools, on the Format tab, in the Picture Styles group, click the frame that you want, or click the More button Button image to see more frame styles.
  • There are five templates with coordinating layouts that you can use or examine for layout ideas. To see these templates, click the Microsoft Office ButtonButton image, click New, and then, in the New Presentation gallery under Templates, click Installed Templates.
  • You can download additional templates from Microsoft Office Online. Click the Microsoft Office ButtonButton image, click New, and then, in the New Presentation gallery, click a category under Microsoft Office Online or click Featured to see the latest and greatest.

When you use an icon in the placeholder to insert an object, such as clip art, the object is inserted into that placeholder. When you insert clip art by using the Insert tab, PowerPoint guesses on the clip art's placement, putting it in an available placeholder or in the placeholder you have selected. If there are no available placeholders, PowerPoint inserts the clip art in the middle of the slide.
