Turn the snap to grid and snap to object options on or off in Excel

When you draw, resize, or move a shape or other object in Excel, you can set it so that it will align or "snap” to the nearest intersection in the grid (even if the grid is not visible) or snap to other shapes or objects. However, you can control the alignment and snap-to capabilities by turning it off.

Turn on the snap-to options

  1. Click the chart, picture, or object in the worksheet.

  2. Do one or both of the following:

    • To position shapes or objects to the closest intersection of the grid, click Shape Format > Align > Snap to Grid.

    • To make a shape or object align with other shapes or objects, click Shape Format > Align > Snap to Shape.

Tip: To temporarily override the snap-to options, hold down ALT while you drag the chart, picture, or object.

Turn off the snap-to options

  1. Click the chart, picture, or object in the worksheet.

  2. Click Format > Align, and depending on which options, click Snap to Grid or Snap to Shape to disable these options.
