ShowCannot create, edit, or view Slicers

You cannot create Slicers with Excel 2011. If you open an Excel for Windows file that contains Slicers, Excel 2011 will open it as read-only and Slicers will not be visible.

ShowCannot select multiple objects

When you drag the mouse to select multiple objects, the objects are not selected. To select multiple objects, press and hold SHIFT , then click to select or unselect objects. To select all objects, click one object, and then press COMMAND + A .

ShowDefault long-format date displays two-digit year in Mac OS X 7 (Lion)

If using Mac OS X 7 (Lion) with the United States locale setting, the long-format default date displays as ‘Wednesday, March 13, 01.' To change the date format to display a four-digit year:

  1. Select the cell(s) containing the date.
  2. On the Format menu, click Cells.
  3. On the Number tab, under Category, click Custom.
  4. In the Type box, type dddd, mmmm dd, yyyy .

ShowThe print preview is blank

If you set your worksheet scaling to Fit to: 1 page(s) wide by 1 pages(s) tall and your worksheet contains a column wider than 8 inches, previewing or printing the worksheet will return blank pages. To resolve this issue, adjust column widths to less than 8 inches.

ShowWhen saving workbooks in the same folder, Excel creates temporary files that cannot be deleted

When saving a workbook, a randomly-named temporary file may appear in the same folder as your saved file. This issue occurs more frequently on the Lion OS than on other platforms. To delete the temporary files:

  1. On the Apple menu, click Force Quit.
  2. Click Finder, and then click Relaunch.

ShowFiles on OneDrive won't open after Mac OS X Lion is installed

If you are using Mac OS X Lion and cannot open documents on OneDrive, you can change a Safari or Firefox browser setting that will allow you to open documents. Do the following steps:

  1. Quit Safari or Firefox.
  2. In the Finder, click Applications, and then select the application icon for Safari or Firefox
  3. On the File menu, click Get Info.
  4. Select the Open in 32-bit mode check box.
  5. Close and reopen Safari or Firefox.

ShowRight-to-left sheet direction is not retained

Sheets that are created by using Excel for Windows can be customized to display right-to-left. When you open a sheet that has right-to-left direction in Excel for Mac, the direction is not retained and the sheet displays left-to-right.

ShowA chart becomes blank when you attempt to print the entire workbook

 Important   This issue is fixed in Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1. Click Downloads to download Service Pack 1 or the latest update.

When the active sheet contains a chart and you select the option to print the entire workbook, the chart becomes blank. This issue affects only the display and does not affect the printed output.

ShowA chart won't print without the sheet when you try to print only the chart

When you select a chart and try to print it, the option to print a selection is not available. To print only the chart, move the chart to a different sheet and then print that sheet.

  1. Select the chart.
  2. On the Chart menu, click Move Chart.
  3. Click New sheet, and then click OK.

ShowOrganization charts created by using Organization Chart cannot be edited

Earlier versions of Office for Mac included Organization Chart, a tool for creating and editing organization charts. Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 does not include Organization Chart. When you open a document that contains an object that was created by using Organization Chart, you can view it, but you cannot edit it.

ShowSteps that you perform in the Format Chart dialog box cannot be recorded in a macro

If you are recording a macro, the actions that you perform in the Format Chart dialog box are not recorded. To work around this issue, use the Chart tab on the ribbon when you record a macro.

ShowSorting numeric values in a PivotTable does not work as expected

When you sort numeric values in a PivotTable, only the values in one field will be sorted. To work around this issue, select each field and sort the numeric values in the field.

ShowThere are multiple issues when you save workbooks in PDF format

  • When you use the Save As dialog box to save a workbook as a PDF file and you enter a file name that already exists, Excel does not warn you that you are about to replace the existing file.
  • When you use the Print dialog box and select the Entire Workbook option to save a two-sheet workbook as a PDF file, the result is a single file with two pages. The file name contains the word "Sheet 1", despite the presence of two sheets in the workbook.
  • When you use the Print dialog box and select the Entire Workbook option to save a multi-sheet workbook as a PDF file, more than one file is generated, but the number of files does not correspond to the number of sheets in the workbook. For example, a workbook with seven tabs might generate three separate PDF files.

ShowNo warning appears when you apply color and cell formatting in Excel 2011 that does not work in earlier versions of Excel

Excel 2011 includes an expanded color palette, themes, and cell formatting options that are lost when you save the workbook in an earlier file format, such as .xls, or if the workbook is opened in an earlier version of Excel.

ShowActiveX controls do not display

Workbooks created by using Excel for Windows might contain ActiveX controls that cannot be displayed when the workbook is opened in Excel for Mac.

ShowCustom file properties remain after you remove personal information from the file

When you remove personal information from a file in Excel Preferences, any custom file properties that the file contains are not removed.

ShowExcel quits unexpectedly when you select the whole sheet as the range for removing duplicate rows

If you select an entire sheet and then attempt to remove duplicate rows, Excel quits unexpectedly. To avoid this issue, select a smaller range to remove duplicates from.

ShowOffice documents cannot be saved to OneDrive or SharePoint if they are located on an AFP or NFS network location

 Important   This issue is fixed in Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1. Click Downloads to download Service Pack 1 or the latest update.

If you run Office in a NetBoot or network home folders configuration, you cannot save documents to Windows Live OneDrive or SharePoint if they are located on a network location that uses the AFP or NFS file system.

ShowOffice for Mac files located on SharePoint or Windows Live OneDrive may not open if you have not opened Office for Mac 2011 at least one time

 Important   This issue is fixed in Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 2. Click Downloads to download Service Pack 2 or the latest update.

You cannot open files located on SharePoint or Windows Live OneDrive from Safari or Mozilla Firefox until you have opened Word, Excel, or PowerPoint at least one time.

ShowA custom dictionary’s language-specific settings are ignored

When you set a custom dictionary to work only for a specific language, the language setting is not used when you check the spelling in Excel or PowerPoint.

ShowYou have to sign in multiple times when you access the Information Rights Management licensing server

If you clear the Save password in my Mac OS X keychain check box when you access the Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) server, you will have to sign in multiple times. To work around this issue, make sure that the Save password in my Mac OS X keychain check box is selected.

ShowYou cannot paste and then ungroup a vector PICT image

Per Apple guidelines, when you paste a vector PICT image, it is saved as PDF instead of PICT, and you cannot ungroup the PDF image.

ShowA linked picture from a Web site will not appear

If you add a link to a picture that is located on a Web site, the next time that you open the file, the picture is displayed as a red X. This occurs because the application does not recognize the Web site path. To work around this issue, on the Web site, copy the image, and then paste it into the Office for Mac application.

ShowOffice for Mac might not work correctly if you set Parental Controls

If you set Parental Controls on the Mac OS, Office for Mac applications might not work correctly. To resolve the issue, on the Apple menu, click System Preferences, click Parental Controls, and then turn off Parental Controls.

ShowYou do not see any clip art in the Entertainment, Emotions, or Food and Dining categories in the Clip Art Gallery

Office for Mac displays no clip art in the Entertainment, Emotions, or Food and Dining categories in the Clip Art Gallery. To work around the issue, search for the following clip art:

  • Entertainment:     chess, roulette, dominoes
  • Emotions:     crying, smiling
  • Food & Dining:      bread, banana, cantaloupe, bamboo steamer, corn, strawberries, pepper, pineapple, bok choy, raspberries, orange, apple, blueberries, paper bag, cheeseburger, ice cream cone, bag of groceries, hot dog, sandwich, coconut, egg, morning, paper cup, wine, beer, martini, orange juice, fruit juice, birthday cake, chef

ShowThe Clip Art Gallery is displayed in English instead of Chinese

The Clip Art Gallery is displayed in English instead of Chinese.

ShowYou cannot save a file that includes a hyperlink

A document that has a hyperlink that includes non-Latin characters, a shape, or is otherwise corrupted, might prevent you from saving or editing the hyperlink. To work around the issue, delete the object that you added the hyperlink to.

ShowYou cannot run certain workflows

The following workflows included with Office for Mac do not work:

  • In Excel, Import text file and create a table
  • In Outlook, Send image attachments to iPhoto

ShowYou cannot print a Visual Basic project

Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 does not let you print a Visual Basic project. To work around the issue, copy the code of your Visual Basic project, paste it into a text-editing program, and then print.
