By using a file format converter in Microsoft Office Word 2007, you can open a document that was created in Microsoft Works. After you open the document, you can save it in the Office Word 2007 format.

 Note   The File menu has been replaced with the Microsoft Office Button Button image.

Save a Works document in Office Word 2007 format

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button Button image, and then click Open.
  2. In the Files of type list, click Works 6.0 - 9.0.

    If this option is not listed, you must install the file format converter.

    ShowHow?

    Do one of the following:

    ShowIn Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003

    1. Exit all programs.
    2.  Tip   You may want to print this topic before you exit all programs.

    3. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    4. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs , and then click Remove a program.
    5. In the Currently installed programs list, click the name of the Microsoft Office edition that you installed or click Microsoft Office Word 2007 (depending on whether you installed Word as part of Office or as an individual program), and then click Change.

      The Configuration Wizard opens.

    6. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Continue.
    7. On the Installation Options page, click the plus sign (+) next to Office Shared Features.
    8. Click the plus sign (+) next to Converters and Filters, and then click the plus sign (+) next to Text Converters.
    9. Click the arrow next to Works 7.0-9.0 Converter for Windows, click Run from My Computer, and then click Continue.

      The file format converter is installed.

    ShowWindows Vista

    1. Exit all programs.
    2.  Tip   You may want to print this topic before you exit all programs.

    3. Click the Start button Button image, and then click Control Panel.
    4. In Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
    5. Right-click the name of the Microsoft Office edition that you installed or right-click Microsoft Office Word 2007 (depending on whether you installed Word as part of Office or as an individual program), and then click Change.
    6. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Continue.
    7. On the Installation Options page, click the plus sign (+) next to Office Shared Features.
    8. Click the plus sign (+) next to Converters and Filters, and then click the plus sign (+) next to Text Converters.
    9. Click the arrow next to Works 7.0-9.0 Converter for Windows, click Run from My Computer, and then click Continue.

      The file format converter is installed.

  3. In the Open dialog box, locate the file that you want to open, and then select it.
  4. Click Open.
  5. Click the Microsoft Office Button Button image, and then click Save As.
  6. In the File name box, type the file name that you want.
  7. In the Save as type list, click Word document, and then click Save.
