Security Because templates can store macro viruses, be careful about opening them or creating files based on new templates. Take the following precautions: run up-to-date antivirus software on your computer, set your macro security level to high, clear the Trust all installed add-ins and templates check box, use digital signatures, and maintain a list of trusted sources.
Do one of the following:
Copy styles, AutoText entries, toolbars, or macros to a template
- On the Tools menu, click Templates and Add-Ins.
- Click Organizer, and then click the tab for the items you want to copy.
- To copy items to or from a different template (template: A file or files that contain the structure and tools for shaping such elements as the style and page layout of finished files. For example, Word templates can shape a single document, and FrontPage templates can shape an entire Web site.) or file, click Close File to close the active document (active document: The document in which you're working. Text you type or graphics you insert in Microsoft Word appear in the active document. The title bar of the active document is highlighted.) and its attached template or to close the Normal template (Normal template: A global template that you can use for any type of document. You can modify this template to change the default document formatting or content.). Then click Open File, and open the template or file you want.
- Click the items you want to copy in either list, and then click Copy.
Load a global template or add-in program into Microsoft Word
Templates (template: A file or files that contain the structure and tools for shaping such elements as the style and page layout of finished files. For example, Word templates can shape a single document, and FrontPage templates can shape an entire Web site.) and add-ins (add-in: A supplemental program that adds custom commands or custom features to Microsoft Office.) can be loaded either for the current session only or whenever you start Word.
- On the Tools menu, click Templates and Add-Ins.
- Under Global templates and add-ins, select the check box next to the template or add-in you want to load.
If the template or add-in you want does not appear in the box, click Add, switch to the folder that contains the template or add-in you want, click it, and then click OK.
Note If you want the template or add-in to be available whenever you start Word, save it in the startup folder. By default, the startup folder is Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup.
Note If you're looking for specific types of templates (such as templates for letters, calendars, or business plans), visit Templates on Microsoft Office Online.
