Continue footnote and endnote numbering from one document to another

To number notes sequentially from one document to another, you must set the starting number of notes for each document.

  1. On the Insert menu, point to Reference, and then click Footnote.
  2. In the Start at box, enter the starting number you want.
  3. In the Numbering box, click Continuous.
  4. Click Insert.

Note  Microsoft Word automatically numbers the notes sequentially from one document to another if the documents are part of a master document (master document: A "container" for a set of separate files (or subdocuments). You can use a master document to set up and manage a multipart document, such as a book with several chapters.) or if you've used the INCLUDETEXT field to connect the documents.
