When publishing for the Web, I often received submissions from writers that had been carefully formatted in plain text (the best way to import articles into an HTML editor). However, curly or smart quotes — those curvaceous quote marks as seen in Microsoft Office Word — do not get reformatted in plain text, and thus are considered errors when text is loaded into the HTML editors.
Here's how you can change your defaults in Word to get rid of smart quotes and use plain old straight quote marks instead.
