Make a spooky tablecloth using Word

Applies to
Microsoft Word 2002

Getting ready for a Halloween party? Making tablecloths can be simple and fun with Word, a white cotton tablecloth, crayons, and an iron. Printer ink will transfer onto the cotton, creating an outline that you can color in using whatever theme you like.

You can use one clip, like a pumpkin, over and over again to create a decorative border, or you can use a variety of pieces of clip art to tell a story. Since making the transfer involves coloring cloth with crayons, simple clip art works best.

To find and print clip art

  1. Open a new document in Word.
  2. Go to Clip Art and Media on Microsoft Office Online to find Halloween clip art.
  3. In the Search for box, type Halloween.
  4. In the Results should be text box, select Clip Art. Then, click Go.
  5. Find one to several clips that you want to use. Under each clip you choose, click the check box. When you have selected all the clips you need, click Download <number> clips in the upper left corner of the page.
  6. Click Download Now. The Microsoft Clip Organizer opens, showing you the clips that you downloaded.

Note   If you have never visited Office Clip Art and Media before, you may need to read and accept the End-User License Agreement before downloading the clips.

  7. Click each clip, and then drag them on to your Word document one at a time.
  8. Modify the size of each clip to make it as big or small as you want by right-clicking the clip and then clicking Format Picture.
  9. In the Format Picture dialog box, click the Size tab and use the arrows to make it the size you want.
  10. On the File menu, click Print.

To transfer clip images onto a tablecloth

  1. Iron the printed paper face-down on the tablecloth.

Important   Use the cotton setting on your iron for the best results.
  2. Pull away the paper to see the outline of the clip image on the tablecloth.
  3. Using non-toxic crayons, color in the picture directly on the tablecloth.
  4. Place wax paper both under and over the colored-in portion of the tablecloth.
  5. Pat the iron over the wax paper until the wax has melted into the fabric.

Important   Make sure you place wax paper under the cloth. If you don't the wax will go right through the cloth onto your ironing board.
  6. Carefully peel off the wax paper to reveal a spooky transfer on your tablecloth.

Tips

  • Practice on an old t-shirt a couple of times to get a feel for how long it takes for your iron to melt the wax.
  • You can also purchase transfer paper from your local craft store to create iron-ons that don't use crayons.
