Applies to

2003 version of the following Microsoft Office programs: Access 2003, Excel 2003,
FrontPage® 2003, Outlook® 2003, Publisher 2003, PowerPoint® 2003, and Word 2003

2002 version of the following Microsoft Office XP programs: Access 2002, Excel 2002,
FrontPage® 2002, Outlook® 2002, Publisher 2002, PowerPoint® 2002, and Word 2002

This feature is available in the Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English (U.S.), and Japanese language versions of Microsoft Office 2003 and in the Simplified Chinese, English (U.S.), and Japanese language versions of Microsoft Office XP.

After speech recognition is installed, you can use it in Office by switching between two modes— Dictation mode and Voice Command mode.

You can set up your computer to use Dictation mode only, Voice Command mode only, or both Dictation mode and Voice Command mode in a language other than that of your language version of Office. For example, you can use speech recognition in English with the Japanese language version of Office.

Requirements for using speech recognition in another language

To use speech recognition in a language other than that of your language version of Office, you need the following:

  • If you are running an English language version of Office, your organization must have purchased, distributed, and installed the Microsoft Office Multilingual User Interface Pack (Office MUI Pack). For details, see your system administrator.
  • If you are running the Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Hong Kong SAR Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, or Thai language versions of Office, you can use speech recognition in English if you have installed the Microsoft Office English User Interface Pack (Office English MUI Pack).
  • If you are running the Hong Kong SAR Chinese language version of Office, you can also use speech recognition in Simplified Chinese if you have installed the Microsoft Office Simplified Chinese User Interface Pack (Office Simplified Chinese MUI Pack).

Notes

  • The Office English MUI Pack ships with the Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Hong Kong SAR Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, and Thai language versions of Office.
  • If you are running the Japanese language version of Office, call your Microsoft subsidiary to order your free copy of the Office English MUI Pack (there is a charge for shipping and handling).
  • The Office Simplified Chinese MUI Pack ships with the Hong Kong SAR Chinese language version of Office.

Issues

  • If you are running Microsoft Windows NT® 4.0 with the Simplified Chinese or Japanese language version of Office, Voice Command mode is only available in Word.
  • If neither Dictation mode nor Voice Command mode are on the Language bar, you may be using an Input Method Editor (IME) from a previous version of Office. To use speech recognition, you must use an IME that comes with the Microsoft Office Multilingual User Interface Pack. IMEs are also available for download on the Microsoft Office Online Web site. They are also included in the Microsoft Office Proofing Tools. You can select another IME on the Language bar.
  • To use Simplified Chinese with speech recognition in Office XP, use the Simplified Chinese IME 3.0. To use Simplified Chinese with speech recognition in Office 2003, use the Simplified Chinese IME 2003.

  • If Dictation mode is not on the Language bar, your current input language (keyboard layout) may not support the speech recognition engine.
  • If Voice Command mode is not on the Language bar, the language of the user interface may not support the speech recognition engine.
  • If you change the default keyboard layout by using the Text Services icon in Control Panel, and the Apply button is not available after making changes, close and reopen the Text Services dialog box.
  • Speech recognition is not included in the Japanese language stand-alone 2002 and 2003 version of Access, Excel, FrontPage, Outlook, PowerPoint, or Publisher. Speech recognition is available in these Office XP and Office 2003 programs provided that you are also running the Japanese language stand-alone version of Word 2002 or 2003.
