Print a master document

Applies to: Microsoft Office Word 2003

Printing a master document (master document: A "container" for a set of separate files (or subdocuments). You can use a master document to set up and manage a multipart document, such as a book with several chapters.) is a fast way to print all the subdocuments without opening them individually.

  1. On the View menu, click Outline.
  2. If the subdocuments are collapsed, click Expand Subdocuments Button image on the Outlining toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, press ALT and then SHIFT+F10.).
  3. Expand or collapse headings to display as much of the document as you want to print.

ShowHow?

Collapse any of the following:

ShowAll body text to see headings only

Note   To redisplay body text, position the insertion point in the first heading, and then click Expand Button image.

ShowAll body text except the first line in each paragraph

  • On the Outlining toolbar, click Show First Line Only Button image. An ellipsis (...) after the first line indicates that additional lines of text are collapsed.

Note   To redisplay text, click the button again.

ShowText below a specific heading level

  • On the Outlining toolbar, click the lowest heading you want to display in the Show Level box. For example, click Show Level 3Button image in the Show Level box to display heading levels 1 through 3.

Note   To redisplay all levels, click Show All Levels in the Show Level box.

ShowAll subheadings and body text under a heading

  • Double-click the outline symbol Symbol for heading with subtext next to the heading.

Note   To redisplay all subheadings and body text under a heading, double-click the outline symbol Symbol for heading with subtext again.

ShowText under a heading, one level at a time

  • Position the insertion point in the heading. On the Outlining toolbar, click Collapse Button image.

Note   To redisplay text, click Expand Button image.

If you select a heading that includes collapsed subordinate text, the collapsed text is also selected (even though it's not visible). Any changes you make to the heading — such as moving, copying, or deleting it — also affect the collapsed text.

  1. Click Print Button image on the Standard toolbar.
