You can now practice moving menus, commands, and buttons around. Also try making a toolbar button for a menu command, and create your own icon for the button. Let the creative juices flow...

We will show you how to customize something and then give you instructions on how to return to the initial settings. However, please be very careful in this session: If you already have some customized features and you use the reset instructions at the end of the practice, you will delete your existing customizations.

Although this practice session uses Excel, the toolbars and menus will operate in the same way across all the Office programs.

About the practice session

When you click Practice in Excel, a blank worksheet will download to your computer and open in Excel, and a separate window with practice instructions will appear alongside (see picture).

Note     You need to have Excel 2003 installed on your computer.

Tips

  • If the practice instructions aren't visible, or if they disappear when you click in Excel, click the Excel Help taskbar button and then click the Auto Tile button in the upper-left corner of the instructions.
  • If the practice instructions cover up Excel, click the Auto Tile button in the upper-left corner of the instructions.

Before you begin

Make sure to close Excel if it is already running.
