Create footnotes and endnotes

Select different number formats for footnotes or endnotes

Select different number formats for footnotes and endnotes in the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.

When you insert a footnote or endnote, Word automatically uses a standard number format: uppercase Arabic (1,2,3) for footnotes and lowercase Roman numerals (i,ii,iii) for endnotes. You can change that if you'd like to use a different numbering format.

As you can see in the picture, you can also use lower or uppercase letters of the alphabet, lower or uppercase Roman numerals, or symbols. You'll see how in the practice session at the end of the lesson.
