Headers and footers: From basic to elaborate

Header and Footer toolbar with header area of document showing title, date, and time. Arrows indicate the date and time buttons on the toolbar.

Some of the many ways to add details to headers and footers.
Callout 1 Add the date by using the Insert Date button.
Callout 2 Add the time by using the Insert Time button.
Callout 3 Type in text manually.

There are two more buttons on the Header and Footer toolbar that are useful for adding information about the document in the header or footer. They are the Insert Date button Button image and the Insert Time button Button image. These buttons insert dynamic information that is updated to the present date and time every time the document is opened, so it's easy to see when a document has been updated.

However, if you only want to have the date the document was created in the header or footer, then just type the creation date in so that it's not updated by Word.

Don't forget: You can use all the usual text formatting features as well. For example, make the title stand out with a larger font and boldface.
