Share a spreadsheet, document, presentation, or notebook in SkyDrive

Applies to: Microsoft Excel Web App, OneNote Web App, PowerPoint Web App, Word Web App

Your Office file is stored on SkyDrive. Now share it with your friends, or with the world.

Go to your SkyDrive, and click next to—but not on—the file (If the file name is underlined don’t click; you’ll open the file. Instead, click in the highlighted area next to the name of the file).

Then, under Sharing, click Share.
Share command

Type the email address of the person you want to share with. Leave a space or press ENTER between multiple addresses. Decide whether you want them to be able to edit the file, and whether you want them to sign in to SkyDrive to see the file. Then click Share to send an email message that includes a link to the file (If you want, type your own message in the space provided).

Share with care

Remember that if someone forwards your mail to someone else, and you didn’t select Recipients must sign in to view, whoever receives the mail will be able to see the file. So if you want the file just for your recipients to see, select that checkbox before you hit Share.

Editing is different. You give permission to edit a file, and the people with permission have to sign in to SkyDrive to edit. That way, your file doesn’t get edited by strangers.

You don’t lock others out when you edit in the browser. In Word Web App, Excel Web App, and OneNote Web App you and your friends can edit the file at the same time.

Share with your community

Instead of sending email, you might want to share your document with your community on FaceBook, MySpace, or LinkedIn. To do that, click the Post to link, and then pick where you want to share.

Share with the world

You can post a link to your document, just as if you were posting a link to a web page. When someone clicks the link to your document, the document opens in their web browser (but they can’t edit it). To do this, click the Get a link link, and then click the Get a link button.

Press Ctrl+C to copy the resulting URL, and then paste it into an email message, your FaceBook page or Twitter post—wherever you want to share the document.
