You can easily prepare Microsoft Office Visio drawings so that they can be viewed in an Internet browser. You can prepare drawings by saving them as Web pages, saving them in graphics formats that can be embedded in Web pages, or by saving them as regular Visio drawings that can be viewed in the Microsoft Office Visio Viewer.
Saving drawings as Web pages
Save drawings as Web pages when:
- You want to simultaneously export more than one page of a multiple-page drawing.
- Shapes in your drawing include navigational links (hyperlinks), and you want to maintain those links on the Web page.
- You want Visio to create an HTML-coded page and convert a drawing to a format Web browsers can use.
- You want to include reports with a drawing that users can easily view.
For example, you might have a new organization chart that you want everyone in the company to see. To immediately make the chart available on an intranet site, save it as a Web page.
Saving drawings in JPG, GIF, PNG, or SVG format
Save drawings in JPG, GIF, PNG, or SVG format when:
- You already have an HTML-coded page in which you want to insert a Visio drawing.
- You want to export only a portion of a drawing.
For example, you might have a Web page on your intranet site where you have explained the complex process your department uses to handle customer inquiries. Recently, you created a block diagram that makes the process easier to understand. To include the graphic on your Web page, save it as a .gif file, and add an <IMG> tag to your Web page HTML code.
After you save the Visio drawing, you can include it in a Web page by adding the <IMG > HTML tag (for example, <IMG SRC="drawing1.gif" >) to the HTML page.
Note To view a drawing or Web page in SVG format, you must have an SVG viewer installed.
Saving drawings in VSD or VDX format for use with the Visio Viewer
You can share a Visio drawing with someone who does not have Visio, as long as they have the Visio Viewer installed. The Visio Viewer is an ActiveX control that you can use to open and view Visio drawings.
The Visio Viewer can be installed on your computer and other users' computers to open:
- Visio drawing (.vsd) files saved in version 5.0, 2000, 2002, or later.
- Visio XML drawing format (.vdx) files saved in version 2002 or later.
When you open a Visio file using the Visio Viewer, the drawing is displayed in a Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 5.0 or later) window.
Notes
- You and the people you share your drawing with can download the Visio Viewer from the Microsoft Download Center.
- If someone you're sharing your drawing with can't open the drawing in the Visio Viewer, they may have an outdated version of the Visio Viewer. They can download the latest version from the Microsoft Download Center.
- Drawings created in Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003 will only open in the Visio Viewer 2003, not in earlier versions.
