There are several ways to save drawings in Microsoft Office Visio. You can save the active drawing you are working on, whether it is new or existed previously. You can save a copy of the drawing with a different name or in a different location. You can also set properties that affect what happens the next time you open the drawing.
If you have created styles or formatting in a drawing that you want to reuse in other documents you create, you can save the drawing as a Visio template (template: A Visio file (drawing type) with a .vst extension that opens with the stencils, styles, and settings you need to create a particular type of drawing.).
If you share drawings with people who use Microsoft Visio 2002, you can save a drawing in Microsoft Visio 2002 format.
File properties
You can enter file property information in the Properties dialog box from the File menu. When you use the Open dialog box to open the file later, the description and the other properties will appear when you hover the mouse pointer over the file name.
File preview
You can save a preview of the first page of a drawing so that you can more easily identify the drawing before you open it.
Save as template
You can save a drawing file as a template (*.vst) or XML template (*.vtx) that you can use as a model for other drawings.
Save a drawing file in Microsoft Visio 2002 format
When you save a Microsoft Office Visio 2003 file to Microsoft Visio 2002, information and/or formatting specific to Microsoft Office Visio 2003 will be lost or converted.
Save as read-only
To prevent anyone from inadvertently editing or changing your drawing, you can save it as read-only by clicking Save As on the File menu, clicking the Save arrow, and then clicking Read only.
