About associating data with organization chart shapes

You can associate data with organization chart shapes by adding the data as custom properties of those shapes. Associate data if you want to do either or both of the following:

  • Store information about employees, such as department, telephone number, or e-mail, with the organization chart.
  • Export and use the organization chart data in other contexts.

Organization chart shapes already have data fields for custom properties for names, titles, telephone numbers, e-mail, and departments. By default, name and title appear in the shapes. The rest of the properties, and any others you create, are stored in the shapes but do not appear in them. You can choose to display them by using the Options dialog box (on the Organization Chart menu, click Options).

Notes

  • When you export data from an organization chart, the data file includes a field for each custom property associated with the shapes.
  • You can export organization chart data in Microsoft Office Excel workbook (.xls), text tab-delimited (.txt), and CSV comma-delimited (.csv) formats.
