- On the File menu, click Open.
- In the Look In list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the file or files you want to open.
- Do one of the following:
- To open a single drawing file, select it.
- To open multiple drawing files, press CTRL and then click the files you want to open.
Supported file formats
- AutoCAD Drawing File Format (.dwg, .dxf)
- Compressed Enhanced Metafile (.emz)
- Enhanced Metafile (.emf)
- Graphics Interchange Format (.gif)
- JPEG File Interchange Format (.jpg)
- Portable Network Graphics (.png)
- Scalable Vector Graphics Drawing (.svg, .svgz)
- Tag Image File Format (.tif, .tiff)
- Windows Bitmap (.bmp, .dib)
- Windows Metafile (.wmf)
Note File formats may vary slightly between language versions. You might not get exactly the same results if you import files created in different language versions.
- Click Open.
Open a file as a copy
- On the File menu, click Open.
- In the Look In list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the file or files you want to open.
- Select the file you want to open a copy of.
- Click the Open arrow, and then click Copy.
Open a file as read-only
- On the File menu, click Open.
- In the Look In list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the file or files you want to open.
- Select the file you want to open.
- Click the Open arrow, and then click Read only.
Open a workspace file saved in a previous version
- On the File menu, click Open.
- In the Look In list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the workspace file you want to open.
Note In previous versions of Microsoft Visio, workspaces were separate files that had the .vsw extension, but now Visio saves the workspace as part of a .vsd file by default.
- Select the file you want to open, and click Open.
Tips
- To quickly locate files you have recently worked in, you can use any of the following:
- Both the Getting Started task pane and the File menu display a list of the last few files you most recently opened. Click the file name to open it.
- The My Recent Documents folder in the Open dialog box lists the previous files and folders that you have opened.
- You can change the number of recently used files displayed on the Getting Started task pane and File menu. Under General options on the General tab of the Options dialog box (from the Tools menu), change the Recently used file list to the number you want.
