About ODBC, DSNs, and linking drawings to databases

When you create a link between a Microsoft Office Visio drawing and a database, you use a Data Source Name (DSN) made in the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) administrator. DSNs contain information about where the database is stored and which driver to use, and they have unique names so you can find them easily for later use.

When you use the Export to Database dialog box, the Database Export Wizard, the Database Wizard, or the Link to Database command, you choose a DSN. If you haven't already created a DSN, you can make one from within the wizard or dialog box. The Create New Data Source wizard will guide you through the process.

ShowTip

If you make a File DSN, it is typically stored in a default location, c:\Program Files\Common Files\ODBC\Data Sources. If you choose a different location as you go through the Create New Data Source wizard, you'll need to browse to find it if you go through a database connectivity wizard or dialog box again.

After you complete the Create New Data Source wizard, the ODBC Setup dialog box appears, in which you can either select an existing database or create a new one.

Note  If you're using Microsoft Office Excel as a data source, you can't create a workbook from within the wizard. You can only choose an existing one.
