There are two basic ways you can create a new drawing in Microsoft Office Visio. You can use a Visio or custom template, or you can start drawing from scratch.
Creating drawings using templates
A template includes everything you need to create a drawing, from the drawing page to shapes and styles. Using a template ensures consistency across your drawing files, so you can focus on what goes on the page.
When you start a drawing based on a template, a Visio file opens that contains:
- One or more stencils that include related master shapes.
- A blank drawing page that has a grid and measurement system appropriate for the type of drawing you are creating.
- For scaled drawing types, a drawing page set up with the correct scale and page.
- Styles for text, lines, and fills appropriate to the type of drawing you are creating.
Note You can also find Visio templates on Microsoft Office Online. These templates include a draft drawing and specific instructions for modifying that drawing for your use.
Creating drawings from scratch
A new drawing opens a blank drawing page that gives you complete flexibility to create a drawing in any way you like. You can use the drawing page to create a drawing or to create shapes that you can then add to a custom stencil and use in other drawings. You can open any Visio or custom stencil, search for shapes, and use the drawing, format, or ink tools to create your drawing.
