Add text to lines in a Visio 2002 diagram

Applies to
Microsoft Visio® 2002

Often, you can add clarity to a diagram by adding text to a line. For example, you can label the lines coming from a Decision shape in a flowchart with "Yes" and "No." Or you can add text to an arrow to describe the flow of information in a Marketing diagram.

The method that you use to create a line determines how easy it is to add text.

  • If you create a line by dragging a connector shape from a stencil onto the drawing page, the text appears properly as you type it (as shown on the first line, below).
  • If you create a line using the line-drawing tools on the Standard toolbar, you must rearrange text on the line to get it to appear properly (as shown on the second line, below).

Text on lines created in two different ways

Many stencils include connector shapes, such as the Dynamic connector, that you can drag onto the drawing page to create lines.

Dynamic connector shape

To add text to a line

  1. Create the line by dragging a connector shape from a stencil onto the drawing page.
  2. Select the line to which you want to add text.
  3. Type the text you want.

Note   If you don't see any connector shapes on the open stencils, on the File menu, point to Stencils, and then click Open Stencil. Double-click the Visio Extras folder. Select Connectors.vss, and then click Open.
