Customize keyboard shortcuts in Word

Customize dialog box in Word showing the Save in drop down list

The Save in drop-down list.

There are three places you can save customizations in Word:

  • In the Normal template—which is used by Word for the basic structure of all documents—so that customizations are available in every document you create (unless you specify a different template).
  • In a specific template, so that customizations are available in every document based on that template.
  • In an individual document.

You choose where to save different customizations on the Commands tab of the Customize dialog box (Tools menu). You'll get a chance to practice at the end of the next lesson.

To save changes for use in all Word documents, click the Normal option in the Save in drop-down list.

To save changes in a particular template or document, you have to make the customization changes in that particular document or template. The file name of the document will then appear in the Save in drop-down list.

Note     Customizations saved in the Normal template will also be available in other Microsoft Office programs.
