Connect a form to a database

New form with query and data tables

Callout 1 The default form has a layout with a table for query fields in the upper part...
Callout 2 ...and a table for data fields in the lower part.
Callout 3 The Data Source task pane shows you the main groups, queryFields and dataFields, you'll be working with to put controls on the form.

When you finish making the data connection and all your other selections in the wizard, you get the default InfoPath form shown in the picture. It has the principal layout tables and buttons you'll use:

  • The upper area, above the Run Query button, will contain controls that you use to type in information and run a query on it.
  • The lower area, below the Run Query button, will contain controls that you use to enter new data into the database or see data that's returned from a query.

Obviously, it's a rudimentary form. You need to add controls and apply some formatting elements to make it usable. Don't worry if it doesn't make crystal-clear sense right now.

In the Data Source task pane that opens, you see the groups that InfoPath created based on your data connection, queryFields and dataFields. Next, we'll look in more detail at what these contain.
