Consider this scenario: you're preparing a report about the previous fiscal quarter at your company. You need some hard numbers and a bit of analysis about the state of the business. Where would you go to obtain the most current information? How could you present that information in a visual way so that it's easy to communicate trends or show areas for improvement?
If your company uses PerformancePoint Server, then a dashboard created from that system would be a great place to start. Dashboards can help you answer questions about things such as sales revenue for a specific time period, which cities had the most sales, or even how your company is doing for staffing levels and employee development.
For most people in a company, the dashboard is the end point of work that was done by someone else: for example, by someone in the IT department, a business analyst, or a consultant who was hired to create it. Logically, what's available in the dashboard at your company will depend on how that dashboard was set up.
