Fig. 1 Find themes on the Page Layout tab in Word or Excel, or on the Design tab in PowerPoint. Theme files (.thmx) and theme effects files (.eftx) are both file types new to the 2007 Office system.
Fig. 2 Although it was possible to save custom chart types in earlier versions of Excel, the addition of chart templates in Excel 2007 (.crtx files) enables you to save charts to individual templates, making them easier to share. Find the Save As Template option on the Chart Tools Design tab.
Office Open XML Format file types are available for all of the file types you already know (such as documents and templates in Word; workbooks, templates, and add-ins in Excel; and presentations, templates, add-ins, and shows in PowerPoint). Additionally, a few new file types are also available for new 2007 Office system features, including the following:
- Document themes, available in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, use the file extension .thmx. When you save a custom set of theme colors or theme fonts, they are saved as .xml files, and theme effects are saved using the file format .eftx.
- The new Excel chart templates use the file extension .crtx.
- You can save the active document theme as a custom theme, or create your own theme color or theme font sets, directly from the Themes group on the Page Layout tab of the Ribbon in Word or Excel, or the Design tab in PowerPoint. However, custom theme effects files can be created only by using XML.
- To use the chart templates you save, open the templates folder at the top of the Insert Chart dialog box. To access this dialog box, in Excel, on the Insert tab, in the Charts group, click the Dialog Launcher . Chart templates cannot be opened as independent Excel files.
