The small print: headers and footers

Title slide with footers excluded

If you select the Don't show on title slide check box, all the footer options you've chosen will be absent from the title slide and will resume on the next slide (assuming it's not also a title slide).

By default, the first slide in a presentation has a Title Slide layout, with a centrally placed area for a title and a subtitle underneath that. Some people liken this slide to a cover page on a document, which often has no page number and possibly no footer text at all.

The "don't show" option

In the case of slide footers, you have an option to not show any of the footer information on the title slide.

The Don't show on title slide option, located in the Header and Footer dialog box, is shown in the picture. With this check box selected, no footers will show until slide 2, and the slide numbers will begin with the number 2.

About the Title Slide layout     Sometimes, people use the Title Slide layout several times in a show for slides that introduce a new section. The Don't show on title slide option applies to these slides, too, omitting the footers on them. If that's not what you want, there's a way around that: see the next section.
