Microsoft Office 2007 Language Interface Pack overview

Language Interface Packs (LIP) enable you to change the user interface (UI) language for the Microsoft Office programs installed on your computer, as well as use a spell check dictionary and some proofing tools in the LIP language. Download a LIP from Language Interface Pack (LIP) downloads. If you're unsure if need a LIP or a Language Pack, see the Check which Language Packs are installed on your computer section in the Determine if you need a Language Pack page. If you don't see the language that you're looking for, it might be a Language Pack.

In this article

When do I need a Language Interface Pack?

Various language versions of Office contain not only the primary language but also several companion languages. For example, the Spanish primary language version of the 2007 Microsoft Office system contains the LIP software for Basque, Catalan, English, French, and Portuguese (Portugal).

If you need to change an Office program’s user interface (UI) language or you need to use the proofing tools, such as the spelling and grammar checker, for a particular language that is not included as a companion language with the primary language of the 2007 Office release programs that you have installed on your computer, you need to download a LIP. For information about how to change the 2007 Office release display language, see Set the display and editing languages.

Important   You must install the LIP version that matches your version of Office. For example, if you are using Microsoft Office 2007, you must install the Microsoft Office Language Interface Pack 2007. The 2003 version of a Language Interface Pack will not work with the 2007 Office release programs.

For example, if you have the Spanish primary language version of Microsoft Office 2007 installed and you need to change the UI to the Welsh language and edit documents in Welsh, you can install the Welsh LIP and change the UI to Welsh. Because the Welsh LIP is not included in the Spanish primary language version of Office, you need to download, install, and configure your computer to use the Welsh LIP. You can also enable enable keyboard layouts for different languages or insert ASCII or Unicode Latin-based symbols and characters.

For a list of the primary language versions of Office and the companion Language Packs or Language Interface Packs included with the primary language, see The 2007 Microsoft Office suites localized versions.

How is a Language Interface Pack different than a Language Pack?

Language Interface Packs provide a set of tools in a number of languages for four of the 2007 Office release programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The set of tools available varies between languages but includes, at a minimum, a spell check dictionary that can be used in conjunction with an installed version of the 2007 Office release programs.

Language Packs contain localized user interface text for more 2007 Office release programs (Access, Excel, InfoPath, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, and Word), more proofing tools than Language Interface Packs, and a localized version of Help. To see the specific localized version features, see Microsoft Office Language Pack 2007 feature comparison.

Below is a list of LIP languages and the features available in that language.
