Troubleshoot connecting Web Parts

ShowI can't make a connection between two Web Parts.

Possible reasons include the following:

  • You are browsing the Web Part Page. You can only make connections between Web Parts when you are designing the page. To design the page, click the Web Part Page menu, and then click Design this Page.
  • For security or performance reasons, the site administrator may have disabled Web Part connections on this site. In this case, the Connections submenu is not available.
  • The maximum number of connections for a connection type, such as Get Image From, has been reached. If possible, select another connection type, or remove a connection.
  • You may not have the appropriate permission to create Web Part connections.
  • The Connections submenu of the Web Part you are connecting from is hidden. This can occur if the Web Part zone does not allow you to make Web Part connections.
  • You are not using the correct browser. You must use Internet Explorer version 5.5 or later to make a connection between Web Parts.
  • You receive the message "The connection cannot be saved at this time. Try again later." In this case, the site server is busy. Try making the connection again when the site server is not busy. Also, check to see if your SharePoint quota has been exceeded.
  • There are no other Web Parts on the page that are compatible with this Web Part. The Web Part developer has created the Web Part so that only certain types of connections are supported.

For assistance, contact the site administrator or Web Part developer.

ShowI can't delete or modify a Web Part connection.

Possible reasons include the following:

  • You are only browsing the Web Part Page. You can delete or modify connections between Web Parts only when you are designing the page.
  • You may not have permission to delete or modify Web Part connections. The Web Part developer or site administrator does not want connections to be modified or deleted on this Web Part Page.
  • You are not using the correct browser. You must use Internet Explorer version 5.5 or later to delete a connection between Web Parts.
  • The connection between two Web Parts is broken. You or another user deleted or disabled a Web Part after you made a connection to it.
  • The Web Part connection was created in another program. You cannot delete or modify this connection through the browser. To delete or modify this connection, you must use an HTML editor compatible with Windows SharePoint Services, such as Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003.
  • The Web Part you are trying to connect to is a static Web Part. To modify this connection, you must use a Windows SharePoint Services—compatible HTML editor, such as Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003.
  • A column in the Create/Edit Connection dialog box is not available. You attempted to modify a connection and the previous column selected no longer exists in the Column list because the list of columns was changed by another user. Select another column.

For assistance, contact your site administrator or the Web Part developer.

ShowThe Connections submenu is hidden or unavailable.

Possible reasons include the following:

  • You are not using the correct browser. You must use Internet Explorer version 5.5 or later to create, modify, or delete a connection between Web Parts.
  • The Web Part you are trying to connect from does not allow connections. You can try to find or import another Web Part that does what you want and that allows connections.
  • The zone that contains the Web Part does not allow connections.
  • The Web Parts were connected in shared view and so the connection cannot be changed in personal view. If you can, switch to shared view.
  • You do not have permission to make Web Part connections.
  • Web Part connections are not supported at the site.

ShowI can't find a Web Part on the Web Part Page on the Connections submenu, or the available Web Parts submenu is unavailable.

Only compatible Web Parts are available from the Connections submenu. This situation can occur for one or more of the following reasons:

  • The Web Part you are trying to connect to does not support making connections. Not all Web Parts are designed to be connected.
  • The Web Part you are trying to connect from is not compatible with the Web Part you are trying to connect to because it has an incompatible Web Part type. This can occur for the following reasons:
    • You are in personal view, the Web Part you are trying to connect from is a shared Web Part or personalized Web Part, and the Web Part you are trying to connect to is a private Web Part on the same Web Part Page.
    • The Web Part you are trying to connect from is a private Web Part, and the Web Part you are trying to connect to is a shared Web Part or personalized Web Part on the same Web Part Page.
  • The Web Part you are trying to connect to or from allows only one connection. To create a new connection, you must first remove the current connection from that Web Part.
  • The Web Part you are trying to connect to is already connected to the Web Part you are trying to connect from through a different connection type. Web Parts can have more than one connection, but each connection must be to a different Web Part.
  • The Web Part you are trying to connect to is not compatible with the Web Part you are trying to connect from because the Web Part is required to run on either a client or server. There are two situations that can apply:
    • The Web Part you are trying to connect to currently runs on the client, and the Web Part you are trying to connect from runs on the server.
    • The Web Part you are trying to connect to currently runs on the server, and the Web Part you are trying to connect from runs on the client.

In this case, the Web Parts you are trying to connect must both run either on the client or on the server.

For assistance, contact the site administrator.

ShowI get the message "Web Part connections cannot be created at this time. One or more Web Parts on this page contains more information about the problem."

This message is displayed when there is a problem with the source code of the Web Part or the Web Part contains run-time errors. To correct these problems, note the details of the problem and contact the Web Part developer or your site administrator.

ShowI'm having problems finding and connecting a List View Web Part.

Possible reasons include the following:

  • You changed the view of the list. Switching to a different view may disable Web Part connections that depend on columns in the view.
  • Although most lists have corresponding List View Web Parts and can be connected, several list types, including Issues and Surveys, are not supported.
  • Although most list column types are supported in List Web Part connections, several list column types, including Multiple Lines of Text and Hyperlink (for filtering), are not supported.

ShowI'm having problems connecting to a Web Part on another Web Part Page.

Possible reasons include the following:

  • For performance or security reasons, the Web Part developer may have disabled connections to Web Parts on other Web Part pages.
  • The connection may be broken. Try re-creating or editing the connection in a Windows SharePoint Services—compatible HTML editor, such as Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003.
  • The Web Part Page you are trying to connect to or from may not exist on the same top-level site as your current Web Part Page. You can only create Web Part connections between different Web Part Pages that are on the same top-level site.
  • The Web Part Page you are trying to connect to or from may not exist on the same internet domain as your current Web Part Page. You can only create Web Part connections between different Web Part Pages that are on the same internet domain.
