Step 13: Modify Settings to Update Search

If you did not require SSL, this is an optional step.

By default, SharePoint Portal Server uses Default Web Site in IIS as the portal site. If you created your portal site on Default Web Site and you have required SSL, you must perform the steps in this section to include content from the portal site in the index.

  1. Modify the alternate portal access settings to use https:
    1. On the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration for Server_Name page, in the Portal Site and Virtual Server Configuration section, click Configure alternate portal site URLs for intranet, extranet, and custom access.
    2. On the Configure Alternate Portal Access Settings page, rest the pointer on Default Web Site, click the arrow that appears, and then click Edit on the menu that appears.
    3. On the Change Alternate Access Setting page, in the Default URL box, change http to https, and then click OK.
  2. If you previously specified an account for the site restriction rule for a site and do not want to use the default content access account (default crawling account), specify the account again after applying alternate portal access settings:
    1. On the Site Settings page, in the Search Settings and Indexed Content section, click Configure search and indexing.
    2. On the Configure Search and Indexing page, in the Other Content Sources section, click Manage content sources.
    3. On the Manage Content Sources page, rest the pointer on This portal, click the arrow that appears, and then click View Gatherer Log on the menu that appears.
    4. On the Gatherer log details page, in the Actions list, click Exclude and Include Content.
    5. On the Exclude and Include Content for Portal_Content page, rest the pointer on the name of the site restriction for the site (for example, server_name), click the arrow that appears, and then click Edit on the menu that appears.
    6. On the Edit Rule page, in the Specify Authentication section, click Specify crawling account.
    7. In the Account box, type the user name or ID that can access the resources in this URL space. Examples are user_name, user_name@org, or DOMAIN\user_name.
    8. In the Password box, type the password for this user name. Your password is protected and can be used only to access the needed resources for the purpose of crawling content.
    9. In the Confirm password box, type the password for this user name again.
    10. To prevent Basic authentication from being used, select the Do not allow Basic authentication check box.
    11. Click OK.
    12. Click Configure Search and Indexing at the top of the Exclude and Include Content for Portal_Content page.
    13. On the Configure Search and Indexing page, in the Other Content Sources section, click Manage content sources.
    14. On the Manage Content Sources page, rest the pointer on Site directory, click the arrow that appears, and then click View Gatherer Log on the menu that appears.
    15. On the Gatherer log details page, in the Actions list, click Exclude and Include Content.
    16. On the Exclude and Include Content for Non_Portal_Content page, rest the pointer on the name of the site restriction for the site (for example, server_name), click the arrow that appears, and then click Edit on the menu that appears.
    17. On the Edit Rule page, in the Specify Authentication section, click Specify crawling account.
    18. In the Account box, type the user name or ID that can access the resources in this URL space. Examples are user_name, user_name@org, or DOMAIN\user_name.
    19. In the Password box, type the password for this user name. Your password is protected and can be used only to access the needed resources for the purpose of crawling content.
    20. In the Confirm password box, type the password for this user name again.
    21. To prevent Basic authentication from being used, select the Do not allow Basic authentication check box.
    22. Click OK.
  3. If the proxy server settings for the index management server differ from the default proxy server settings, reset the proxy server settings for the index management server after applying alternate portal access settings.

Note   The default proxy settings are those specified on the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page. The settings for the index management server are those specified on the Search Server Settings page. When you apply alternate portal access settings, the proxy server settings specified on the Search Server Settings page are overwritten by the settings on the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page.

    1. On the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration for Server_Name page, in the Component Configuration section, click Manage the Search Service.
    2. On the Manage Search Settings page, in the Servers and Topology section, click the name of the index management server.
    3. On the Search Server Settings page, in the Proxy Server Settings section, specify the proxy server information for the index management server, and then click OK.
  4. Perform a full update on the People, Site directory, and This portal content sources:
    1. On the Site Settings page, in the Search Settings and Indexed Content section, click Configure search and indexing.
    2. On the Configure Search and Indexing page, in the Other Content Sources section, click Manage content sources.
    3. On the Manage Content Sources page, rest the pointer on People, click the arrow that appears, and then click Start Full Update on the menu that appears.
    4. Rest the pointer on Site directory, click the arrow that appears, and then click Start Full Update on the menu that appears.
    5. Rest the pointer on This portal, click the arrow that appears, and then click Start Full Update on the menu that appears.
    6. Wait for the updates to complete.
  5. For the People, Site directory, and This portal content sources, view the gatherer log for errors such as "access denied" and certificate warnings:
    1. On the Manage Content Sources page, rest the pointer on People, click the arrow that appears, and then click View Gatherer Log on the menu that appears.
    2. Rest the pointer on Site directory, click the arrow that appears, and then click View Gatherer Log on the menu that appears.
    3. Rest the pointer on This portal, click the arrow that appears, and then click View Gatherer Log on the menu that appears.
  6. On the index management server, if you have the proxy settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer specified as the same as those on the Search Server Settings page, you might receive a security alert when you access the portal site. This alert could include the following information:
    • Whether the certificate was issued by a company you trust
    • Whether the certificate date is valid
    • Whether the name of the certificate is valid

If a warning icon (a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it) accompanies either or both of the first two items, you must fix the issue. If you see a warning icon next to the third item, you can bypass the certificate name check by doing the following:

    1. On the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration for Server_Name page, in the Component Configuration section, click Manage the Search Service.
    2. On the Manage Search Settings page, in the Servers and Topology section, click the name of the index management server.
    3. On the Search Server Settings page, in the SSL Certificate Warning Configuration section, select the Ignore SSL Certificate name warnings check box.
    4. Click OK.

Important   If you choose to ignore certificate name warnings, it is recommended that you do not use the index management server to crawl sites on the Internet.
