Customize the navigation on your team site

You can customize the navigation on your team site by adding, removing, or editing the links. To customize the navigation, just click EDIT LINKS.

Edit links

Callout 1 Click EDIT LINKS to customize the top navigation.
Callout 2 Click EDIT LINKS to customize navigation in the Quick Launch.

Note    If you don’t see the option to edit links, you probably don’t have permission to customize the navigation. To customize the navigation, you need to be a site owner or have permission to customize the site.

You can also customize the location of the navigation by using a different site layout, as explained later in this article.

About the site navigation

The navigation is like a table of contents that shows your visitors and customers what information is available on your site. Since the navigation links appear on every page, they make it easy to browse the site, discover information, and return to previously viewed pages. As you build your site, you want to make sure the site navigation is clear and simple for your users.

The links that appear on the left or top of your site are generally referred to as the site navigation. When you create a new list or library, a new link appears automatically under Recent on the Quick Launch. Only the five newest links appear in the Recent section.

The Recent link on the Quick Launch displays the recently created pages, lists, and libraries

You can rename these links, rearrange them, add new ones, add sublinks, and so on. You can also create links that go to other websites if you like.

Note    When you create a new page, it does not automatically appear in the Quick Launch. You have to manually create a link to the page.

You can also customize the navigation links on the top navigation of your site to change capitalization, rearrange the order, or include links to the subsites users visit most often.

Customize the navigation links

You can add a new link to the navigation by dragging an app from the Site Contents page directly to the navigation, or by clicking link and then entering the URL.

Drag an app from Site Contents to the navigation

The easiest way to add a link is to drag an app from the Site Contents page to the navigation.

  1. Go to the Site Contents page: click Settings Settings button > Site contents.
  2. Click EDIT LINKS on the Quick Launch or the top navigation, depending on where you want to add a link.
  3. Click the app you want to add and drag it to where you want it on the navigation.
    Drag app to navigation
(Refresh the page (F5) to see the animation again.)
  4. Click Save.

Add a new link by entering the URL

If you want to add a link to another site, you can still add it by entering the URL manually.

  1. Click EDIT LINKS on the Quick Launch or the top navigation depending on where you want to add a link.
  2. Click link.
  3. Enter a display name for the link and a target location, making sure you precede it with http://.
  4. Click OK to add the new link to the navigation.
  5. Click Save.

Rename a link

Renaming a link does not affect the corresponding page that the link references.

  1. Click EDIT LINKS on the Quick Launch or the top navigation depending on where you want to edit a link.
  2. Click directly on the link you want to rename and start typing the new name.
  3. Click outside the name, and then click Save.

Change the order of links

You can change the order of the navigation links by dragging and dropping them to a new position.

  1. Click EDIT LINKS on the Quick Launch or the top navigation depending on the location of the link that you want to move.
  2. Select the link that you want to move and drag it to its new position in the navigation.
  3. Repeat these steps for each link you want to move.
  4. When finished, click Save.

Remove a link from the navigation

You can always remove a link from the navigation, which is something you might want to do if the page is needed on the site but not in the navigation. Removing a link to the page only removes the link and does not delete the page.

  1. Click EDIT LINKS on the Quick Launch or the top navigation depending on the location of the link that you want to remove.
  2. Click the X corresponding to the link to remove it from the navigation.
  3. Click Save.

Change the location of the navigation

To change the location of the navigation on your site, you choose a different site layout. The site layout is part of the site design and positions the navigation on the top or the left side of each page on the site.

  1. Click Settings Settings button > Change the Look.
  2. On the Change the Look page, select the Current design (the one you’re already using).
  3. Under Site layout, choose the layout that positions the navigation on the top or the left side of the page, which you see in the preview area.
  4. If you want to apply the layout, click Try it out and on the next page choose Yes, keep it.

This takes you to your site with the new layout applied. To learn more about this feature, see Customize your team site.

Note    Choosing the Oslo site layout moves the Quick Launch navigation to the top of the site and removes the top link bar. You can restore both navigation controls by changing the site layout back to Seattle.

Edit advanced navigation options (publishing sites only)

If the above options are not enough and you want to try more advanced sorting, grouping, or inheritance options for the navigation on your site and subsites, go to the navigation settings under site settings. Make sure you are at the appropriate site level to figure the navigation options.

Note    These additional navigation settings are available only if the publishing features are enabled for your site collection.

  1. Click Settings Settings button > Site settings.
  2. On the Site Settings page, click Navigation.
  3. Choose the options to show subsites or to display the navigation of the parent site. It usually takes some experimentation to get the options right.
