Create sites in different languages from the default language

By default, sites and site collections are created in the language in which the product was installed. You can use the Multi-lingual Interface (MUI) feature to create sites in languages other than the default. For example, if you are running the English version of the application, you can create sites in Japanese and Hindi.

Make sure language packs are installed

Before you can create sites in a language other than the default language, you must ensure that your server farm administrator has installed the language packs for the other languages.

When language packs are installed, language-specific site templates become available for you to create a site from. When you create a site from a language-specific site template, the user interface text that appears on the site is displayed in the language of the specified site template.

Create a new site in a different language

  1. Navigate to the site that you want to use as the parent for your new site. For example, you might use the top-level site in your site collection or the top-level site on your team site.
  2. Click Site Actions, and then click New Site.
  3. On the Create page, click the Browse All tab and then click the language you want to create the site in on the Select Language drop-down menu.

Select languages

  1. Select the template you want to use for your new site, and then type the name and URL for the new site in the appropriate fields on the right side of the page.
  2. Click Create.

SharePoint creates your new site with the user interface in the default language that you selected.
