Open a SharePoint site

You can open a Microsoft SharePoint site for editing from within either Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 or Windows Internet Explorer.

To open a SharePoint site, you must have the proper permissions. If you are unable to open a site, contact your server administrator.

What do you want to do?

Open a site from Office SharePoint Designer 2007

To open a SharePoint site, you must have at least the View permission for that site. This permission is included by default in the Full Control, Design, Contribute, and Read permission levels. If you don't have the necessary permission, contact your server administrator.

Tip   As an alternative to the following procedure, if you have recently opened the site, you can point to Recent Sites on the File menu, and then click the site that you want to open.

  1. On the File menu, click Open Site.

The Open Site dialog box opens.

Open Site dialog box

By default, the Open Site dialog box opens with Web Sites selected on the My Places bar and displays all sites that have been opened by using Office SharePoint Designer 2007.

  1. In the Open Site dialog box, do one of the following:
    • In the large list box, click the site that you want to open, and then click Open.
    • In the Site name box, type the URL of the site that you want to open, and then click Open.

For example, you might type http://My_server/My_site.

Note   No folder or site names appear in the Site name box until you either start typing or click the arrow.

  1. If there is currently another site or file open, the site opens in a new window.

Tips

  • By default, when you start Office SharePoint Designer 2007, it automatically opens the last site that you were working on. If you prefer to have the program open a new, untitled .htm page when it starts, on the Tools menu, click Application Options. On the General tab, under Startup, clear the Open last Web site automatically when SharePoint Designer starts check box.
  • To remove a site from the list in the Open Site dialog box, right-click the site, and then click Remove on the shortcut menu. Removing a site from the list does not delete the site itself, only the link to that site in this dialog box. (To select and remove multiple links in a single operation, click Open on the File menu. In the Open File dialog box, click Web Sites in the My Places bar, and then hold down CTRL while you click to select the links that you want to remove. With all of the links selected, right-click the selection, and then click Remove on the shortcut menu.)

Open a site from Internet Explorer

You can browse to any page in a SharePoint site and then open the site for editing in Office SharePoint Designer 2007. Internet Explorer opens both the current page and the current site.

To open a SharePoint site, you must have at least the View permission for that site. This permission is included by default in the Full Control, Design, Contribute, and Read permission levels. If you don't have the necessary permission, contact your server administrator.

  • In Internet Explorer, browse to a page in the site and then, on the File menu, click Edit with Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer.

If there is currently another site or file open in Office SharePoint Designer 2007, the site opens in a new window.
