Reduce download times by adding thumbnail images to a Web page

You can keep the size of your graphics files as small as possible, to avoid lengthy downloads for the visitors to your Web site, by placing larger pictures on a separate Web page and linking to each by using a smaller image, or thumbnail, of the picture.

Create a thumbnail

  1. On your Web page, right-click the picture that you want to copy for your thumbnail, and then click Copy on the shortcut menu.
  2. Right-click again, and then click Paste on the shortcut menu.

You now have two copies of the same picture, one on top of the other.

  3. Position the pointer over one of the corner handles of the picture on top until you see the Resize pointer.

  4. By default, Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 maintains the proportions of a picture when you resize it by using the picture's corner handles (handle: One of several small shapes displayed around an object when the object is selected. You can move or reshape an object by clicking on a handle and dragging.).

    ShowHow?

    1. Right-click the top picture, and then click Format Picture on the shortcut menu.
    2. Click the Size tab.
    3. Under Scale, select the Lock aspect ratio check box.
    4. Click OK.
  5. Drag the handle to resize the picture until it is approximately 1 square inch.

    This image is your thumbnail.

  6. To further reduce download time, compress the image.

    ShowHow

    1. On the Picture toolbar, click Compress Pictures Button image.

Note   If the selected picture is an OLE object, the Picture toolbar does not automatically appear. To display the Picture toolbar, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Picture.

    2. In the Compress Pictures dialog box, under Target Output, click Web. Under Apply compression settings now, click Apply to selected pictures only.
    3.  Note   You can also select other compression output options, depending on your publication needs. For more information, see Compress Pictures dialog box.

    4. Click Compress.
    5. If a message appears asking whether you want to apply picture optimization, click Yes.

Link the thumbnail image to the original picture

  1. Position the thumbnail image on the page.
  2. Click the original picture.
  3. On the standard toolbar, click Cut Button image.
  4. In your publication, go to or create the page where you want to place the original picture.
  5. On the standard toolbar, click Paste Button image.
  6. Go back to the page that has the thumbnail, and click the thumbnail.
  7. On the standard toolbar, click Insert Hyperlink Button image.
  8. In the Edit Hyperlink dialog box, click Place in This Document, click the page that contains the full-size image, and then click OK.
