Save or open a file as a Publisher 2003 or Publisher 2002 file

Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 uses the same file format as Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 and Microsoft Publisher 2002. Therefore, there are no separate options for these versions in the Save as type list.

 Important   When you save an Office Publisher 2007 file in Publisher 2003 or Publisher 2002, certain features are not supported. For more information, see the Office Publisher 2007 features that are not supported in Publisher 2003 or Publisher 2002 section.

Save an Office Publisher 2007 file as a Publisher 2003 or Publisher 2002 file

  1. On the File menu, click Save As.

    If necessary, switch to the drive and the folder where you want to save the publication.

  2. In the Save as type list, select Publisher Files.
  3. Click Save.

Open an Office Publisher 2007 file in Publisher 2003 or Publisher 2002

You can open an Office Publisher 2007 file in Publisher 2003 or Publisher 2002, but certain features are not supported. If you reopen the same file in Office Publisher 2007, the features that were not supported in earlier versions of Publisher will be available again.

Baseline guidesPartially supported. Publisher 2003 supports baseline guides. In Publisher 2002, baseline guides are not visible when you open your publication.
Baseline alignmentPartially supported. Publisher 2003 supports baseline alignment. In Publisher 2002, text does not align to baselines.
Margin guides and column guidesPartially supported. Publisher 2003 supports margin guides and columns.
Wizards and designsPartially supported. If you want to revise your publication in an earlier version of Publisher, you cannot use any wizards, designs, or design elements that are in a more recent version of Publisher.
Multiple master pagesPartially supported. Publisher 2003 supports multiple master pages. In Publisher 2002, additional master pages are converted to foreground pages.
Mail and catalog merge features
Catalog mergePartially supported. In Publisher 2002, the catalog merge area (catalog merge area: The area in a catalog merge template into which merge fields are inserted. When a merge is completed, data from a data source populates each field, and the catalog merge area will repeat and display multiple records on each page.) of a catalog merge template is converted to a grouped object. Any text merge fields (merge field: A placeholder for text or pictures that you insert into your publication. Information from a data source (such as a name, address, or image) is inserted in each merge field. You can format, copy, move, or delete a merge field.) within the grouped object remain as merge fields in the publication. Publisher 2003 supports catalog merge.
Multiple data sourcesNot supported. Publisher 2003 and Publisher 2002 will support only one data source.
Data filtering and data sortingSupported in both Publisher 2003 and Publisher 2002. The data source (which creates the mail merge recipient list) can be sorted and individual recipients can be added or deleted from the list.
Personalized hyperlinkNot supported. Personalized hyperlinks become static hyperlinks for whatever record was in use when the publication was closed.
Merging picturesPartially supported. Publisher 2003 supports pictures in merges. In Publisher 2002, any merge fields inserted as picture fields will not work.
Web features
Web publicationsPartially supported. Publisher 2003 supports Web publications. In Publisher 2002, a Web publication is converted to a print publication.
Navigation bar wizardsNot supported. Any navigation bars that are created in the most recent version of Publisher are converted to grouped objects, and you are not able to edit the navigation bar by using a wizard. The hyperlinks in the navigation bar remain functional.

  1. On the File menu, click Save As.

    If necessary, switch to the drive and folder where you want to save the publication.

  2. In the Save as type list, select Publisher 2000 Files.
  3. Click Save.

Some features in Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 are not supported if the file is saved as a Publisher 2000 file, and some functionality may be lost. The following features are not supported or are only partially supported.

Fill effects, including picture fills, patterns, tints, shades, gradients, and textures Partially supported. Fill effects are converted to the closest Publisher 2000 match.
Inline objects Not supported. Inline objects appear in their own frame (frame: A space, shown onscreen as a box, that contains a particular element of your publication. Types of frames include text boxes, table frames, and picture frames.), separate from text.
Headers and footers Not supported. Headers and footers are converted to text boxes.

Process colorNot supported. CMYK and PANTONE® (Pantone: A widely-used color-matching system that defines hundreds of spot-color inks or process colors made up of CMYK inks.) colors are converted to RGB colors. Process-color printing is changed to desktop printing.
Object and document trappingNot supported. All trapping information is lost.
Advanced PostScript printer settingsNot supported. All advanced PostScript printer settings are lost.

Recolor picturePartially supported. Only one color is supported. If you chose to keep black parts as black, they are changed to the one supported color.
Clip artPartially supported. Publisher clip art that is saved in your publication is not lost. You can add new clip art only if Office Publisher 2007 is installed.
Flipped graphicsNot supported. Flipped graphics are converted to their original orientation.
Linked graphicsNot supported. All linked graphics become embedded.
Publication layoutPartially supported. The publication is laid out according to your default printer settings. This may result, for example, in changed line breaks in text boxes.

Mail merge with data from Microsoft Office programsPartially supported. Mail merge with data from Microsoft Office 97 files is supported. To use a data file created in a later version of an Office program, first save the file in that program's Office 97 file format.
