Troubleshoot printing business cards in Publisher
This topic addresses the most frequent questions that customers ask us in their feedback about working with business cards in Microsoft Office Publisher 2003. For how-to information about creating business cards, see the links under See Also. I want to find different designs for business cards.
There are a couple of ways to browse for different business card designs that you can use in Publisher: - Look for designs in Publisher Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 offers 45 different Master Design Sets from which you can choose. Each set includes a business card design that you can customize to meet your needs. Additional business card designs are available in Publisher 2003 in the Personal Stationery Sets.
To browse all of the available business card designs at once:- Click New on the File menu.
- Click Publications for Print, and then click Business Cards.
In the window on the right, scroll to see all of the designs. You can adapt these designs for a custom look by changing the color scheme, the font scheme, and the design, or by incorporating your own logo or design elements. - Look for designs on Microsoft Office Online You can find more business card designs for Publisher on the on the Office Templates page on the Microsoft Office Online Web site.
I designed my business card by using one of the Publisher business card designs, but now I want to print them on Avery business card sheets (either 8 or 10 cards per sheet).
Although the default page sizes used in the pre-designed business card publications (also called Business Card Wizards) in Publisher 2003 can be printed on some styles of perforated business card sheets, you can also set up your cards to be printed on Avery paper products. For example, you can use either Avery 8373 (8 cards per sheet) or Avery 8871 (10 cards per sheet). - In your business card publication, click Page Setup on the File menu.
- On the Layout tab, under Publication type, click Label.
- Under Page size, click the scroll arrows at the top or bottom of the list box to locate the Avery product number that you want. Select either Avery 8373 - Business Card (8 cards per page) or Avery 8871 - Business Card (10 cards per page).
Note If the Avery product that you have is not in the list, check the information that came with your Avery product. Other Avery product numbers that are available in Publisher may be equivalent in size and layout to the product that you have purchased. For example, to print to Avery 8763, you can select Avery 5163 or 8163 in Publisher. - Click OK.
Important - Load the printer with the Avery card stock that you want to print on.
Note Before you print on the Avery card stock, practice with some plain test sheets to make sure your cards are being printed the way that you want.
- On the File menu, click Print.
- In the Print dialog box, choose the printer that you want to print to, and then click OK.
I want to print 10 copies per sheet, not 4 copies per sheet.
If you are trying to print multiple copies of your business card per sheet (for example, 10), and Publisher appears to allow only 4 copies per sheet, there are a couple of possible explanations and solutions: - You may have used the Small Publication Print Options dialog box to change the number of copies per sheet If you are using a Business Card Wizard to create your business cards (if you can view the Business Card Options task pane, then you started with a wizard design), you may have changed the copies per sheet by using the Small Publication Print Options dialog box, which can set the number of copies per sheet to four.
Try resetting the number of copies per sheet by using the Business Card Options task pane (if this task pane is not displayed, click Task Pane on the View menu):- In the Business Card Options task pane, under Copies per sheet, first click One, and then click Multiple.
- Click Print Preview on the File menu to check the results.
- You may have started from a blank business card publication instead of a Business Card Wizard If you started your business card by selecting the blank business card that is available when you click Blank Publications in the New Publication task pane or if you selected Business Card in the Page Setup dialog box, Publisher will offer four copies per sheet as the multiple copies option. (If you started your card this way, you will see the Quick Publications task pane instead of the Business Card Options task pane.) You can work around this by setting up your publication to be printed on one of the available Avery business card sizes, which allows you to print either 8 or 10 copies per sheet. For more information about how to do this, see the preceding section.
Publisher does not list the number for the Avery product that I have.
The list of Avery products that Publisher 2003 supports is available in the Page Setup dialog box: - Click Page Setup on the File menu, and then click the Layout tab.
- Under Publication type, click Labels. The list of available Avery products will appear in the list under Page Size.
If the Avery product that you have is not in the list, check the information that came with your Avery product. Other Avery product numbers that are available in Publisher may be equivalent in size and layout to the product that you have purchased. For example, to print to Avery 8763, you can select Avery 5163 or 8163 in Publisher. I want to print my business cards with a portrait orientation (vertical).
The easiest way to design a business card with a portrait orientation is to start with a Business Card Wizard design. If you plan to print portrait business cards to Avery sheets, however, you will need to manually adjust your business card content to fit the page. The following procedures explain how to accomplish both of these tasks. To create a business card with portrait orientation- On the File menu, click New.
- In the New Publication task pane, under Publications for Print, click Business Cards.
- Click the design that you want on the right. (If you want to create your own design from scratch, click a design and then delete all of the elements on the page.)
- In the Business Card Options task pane, under Orientation, click Portrait (this option may not be available if you selected a specialty paper design).
- In the Business Card Options task pane, click Color Schemes and Font Schemes to customize the colors and fonts for your business card.
- To replace placeholder text with your own text, click the placeholder text, and then type. In most cases, the text is resized automatically to fit within the text box.
Tip If you've stored your business contact information in a personal information set, it will appear automatically. To store your contact information, click Personal Information on the Edit menu. - When you have finished customizing your business cards , you can print them by using the options in the Business Card Options task pane, or you use the following procedure to print your cards on Avery sheets.
To set up a portrait business card to be printed on Avery business card sheetsThis procedure assumes that you have already designed your portrait business card by starting with one of the Business Card Wizard designs in Publisher. When you create a card with a portrait orientation by using a Business Card Wizard, selecting an Avery product size in the Page Setup dialog box will change your card to a landscape orientation if you allow Publisher to automatically adjust all wizard-created design elements after you select your Avery publication size. To print cards with portrait orientation on an Avery product, you need to manually adjust your business card content to fit the page. - After selecting the Avery product that you want in the Page Setup dialog box, click No when Publisher asks Do you want Publisher to adjust the wizard created design elements?
Your card will be displayed in a portrait orientation, while the paper will be displayed in landscape orientation. You may need to click Zoom Out a few times to see your entire publication. - On the Objects tool bar, click the Select Objects tool
, and then drag the selection box around the content of your business card. - Click the Group button
that appears. - To rotate the business card, point to the green rotation handle and rotate the publication until it fits on the page.
- Save the changes you have made to your publication.
- To print your publication, click Print on the File menu, and then select the options that you want.
Important You should avoid using any of the design and layout options in the Business Card Options task pane after you set up your publication with an Avery product size. Selecting these options will reset your publication size to the default for the Business Card Wizard, and your cards might not be printed properly on the Avery product you are using.
I want to print information on both sides of my business cards.
If you want to print additional information on the back side of your card, you can add a second page to your business card publication. For more information about adding pages, see the links under See Also. I'm not sure how to add text to my business card.
Publisher is somewhat different from word-processing programs, in which you can type directly on the page. Before you can add text to a publication in Publisher, you must first insert a text box to hold that text. For information about working with text and text boxes, see the links under See Also. I cannot find the Business Card Options task pane.
There are a couple of reasons why the Business Card Options task pane might not be displayed: You might not be working in Publisher
The Business Card Options task pane is available only in Publisher 2003 and Publisher 2002. If you are working in a program other than Publisher or in an older version of Publisher, this task pane will not be available. Note The content of this topic applies to Publisher 2003. You may have started from a blank (non-wizard) business card publication
When you are using Publisher 2003, the Business Card Options task pane is available when you create a business card by starting with one of the pre-designed business card publications (also called Business Card Wizards).
To display the task pane: - Select the Task Pane check box on the View menu.
If you started your business card publication from a blank business card (either by clicking Business Card under Blank Publications in the New Publication task pane, or by selecting Business Card in the Page Setup dialog box), the Quick Publications task pane will be available instead of the Business Card Options task pane. If you want to have the Business Card Options task pane available, but you want to start from scratch, select one of the pre-designed business card publications, and delete all of the content that you do not want. My cards aren't being printed properly on my Avery sheets; they are misaligned.
There are a couple of things you can try to adjust your business card publication to be printed properly on Avery sheets: Check to see that you selected the correct Avery sheet size
If you make changes to your publication by using the Business Card Options task pane after you set up the publication for a specific Avery sheet size in the Page Setup dialog box, Publisher might reset your publication to the default page setup for the Business Card Wizard. This might cause your card to be printed improperly on Avery sheets. To check your page setup, do the following: - On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the Layout tab.
- Under Publication type, click Label.
- Under Page size, make sure that the Avery card size that you want is still selected: either Avery 8373 or Avery 8871.
Try adjusting the spacing between cards on the sheet
If your cards are misaligned on the Avery sheets, you can try measuring the discrepancy and then adjusting the spacing of the cards on the sheet accordingly. - On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the Layout tab.
- Under Printing options, do one of the following:
- If your publication is set up as a business card publication, click Change Copies Per Sheet, and then type the values that you want for margins and gaps in the Small Publication Print Options dialog box.
- If your publication is set up as a label publication (to be printed on a specific Avery sheet size), click Adjust Label Printing, and then type the values that you want for margins and gaps in the Label Printing Options dialog box .
I want to print several different business cards on a single sheet. To print several different cards on a single sheet (that is, business cards that each feature a unique name or information), you must use mail merge to merge the records from a data source (for example, names and titles) with your business card publication. For information about how this works, see the links under See Also.
