How to Prevent Publisher 2003 and 2002 from converting legacy WordArt

Applies to
Microsoft® Office Publisher 2003
Microsoft Publisher 2002

Commercial Printing Fix/Update

Issue:

When you open a Publisher publication containing WordArt that was created in a version of Publisher earlier than Publisher 2002, the WordArt will automatically be converted by Publisher 2003 or 2002 to an updated version of WordArt and may look different than the original WordArt created in the earlier publication.

Issue Details:

In earlier versions of Publisher, WordArt was created by a server application called WordArt 4.2. In Publisher 2003 and 2002, the drawing layer has been changed to match the drawing layer that other Microsoft Office applications use. This drawing layer has its own integrated version of WordArt that is different than WordArt 4.2. With the switch to the Office drawing layer, Publisher has dropped the support of WordArt 4.2 and adopted the integrated WordArt of the Office drawing layer. This change in WordArt requires Publisher 2003 and 2002 to automatically convert earlier WordArt 4.2 objects to editable Office WordArt objects. When this conversion occurs, it is very likely that the converted WordArt will not look the same as the earlier WordArt. For Commercial Printers using Publisher 2003 or 2002, this is a major issue when opening legacy publications from their customers that contain WordArt.
