Use Pictures From a Digital Camera or Scanner in Publisher 2000

It's easy to insert a picture from a digital camera or scanner in a Publisher 2000 publication. Before you do so, however, consider how you will publish your publication. Many cameras and scanners produce pictures with resolutions of 1,200 dots per inch (dpi) or higher. The file for a color picture at 1,200 dpi may be 10 megabytes (MB) or more. Most scanners and digital cameras come with software that enables you to lower the resolution of the picture, which reduces the file size. Use the following information as a guideline for choosing an appropriate photograph resolution:

  • If you're publishing to a Web site, save your photo at 96 dpi. Most computer monitors have a screen resolution of 96 dpi. On a monitor with 96 dpi, a photograph with 96 dpi will appear sharp and clear, while a photograph with higher or lower resolutions may appear blurry or grainy. A photograph saved at 96 dpi rather than 1,200 dpi is approximately 1/10th the size, and therefore will download 10 times faster.
  • If you're publishing to your desktop printer, save your photo at the maximum resolution of your printer. If you use a black-and-white desktop printer, save your photograph as black and white. Most camera and scanner software includes this option.
  • If you're publishing at a commercial printing service or camera store, ask a representative in advance what resolution they can accept. You can use the Pack and Go Wizard in Publisher to compress large files for transport.

Before doing the following procedure, make sure that you have installed the software that came with your digital camera or scanner. If you are using a digital camera, follow your camera's instructions to connect the camera to your computer, and then turn the camera on. If the camera has a Play/Record setting, set the camera to Play.
