It is not possible to run analyses on Enterprise Task Outline
Codes. Project Server 2003 does not support the use of Tasks
(and associated Enterprise Task Outline Codes) in reporting tools
such as Portfolio Modeler and Portfolio Analyzer. Enterprise Task
Outline Codes are displayed only in Project Server views that are
available in Project Web Access and Project Professional. Because
Enterprise Task Outline Codes are not in the OLAP cube, it is not
possible to use Portfolio Analyzer to perform an analysis based on
tasks. The only advantage that Enterprise Task Outline Codes have
over standard task fields is their hierarchical structure.
The following are some examples of types of Enterprise Task
Outline Codes that you might create for your organization.
Task Risk Enterprise Task Outline Codes
Risk is a common metric for project performance. You can create
task risk Enterprise Task Outline Codes and make these required
fields so that a value must be identified for each task in a
project. When you use task risk Enterprise Task Outline Codes, you
can continuously evaluate risks on a task-by-task basis. You can
also use task risk Enterprise Task Outline Codes to create views
that display high-risk tasks for each project.
Task Phase Enterprise Task Outline Codes
Organizations commonly want to report project progress by task
phase. Typically, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is used to
indicate the phase of a task. However, you can simplify reporting
by creating task phase Enterprise Task Outline Codes (such as
design, build, test, deploy). You can then filter based on task
phase to create reports rather than looking at the parent of each
task to determine the phase.
Task Type Enterprise Task Outline Codes
Like project type Enterprise Project Outline Codes, task type
Enterprise Task Outline Codes are used differently in different
organizations. Task type Enterprise Task Outline Codes typically
describe the generic activity that a resource is performing (for
example, administrative, meeting, development). Task type
Enterprise Task Outline Codes facilitate reporting at the task
level and help you to answer questions such as the following:
- How much time are my resources spending on tasks?
- What types of tasks are my resources doing?
Task Billable Enterprise Task Outline Codes
For some organizations, it is important to track the number of
billable hours that are spent on a project. Defining task billable
Enterprise Project Outline Codes that include two values, billable
and non-billable, can enable better reporting in a number of ways.
For example, when this information is used in an accounting system,
the process of charging customers requires simply running a report
against a project in which actual hours are reported.
