Naming Enterprise Calendars

Enterprise Calendars are saved in the Enterprise Global Template and published to the Project Server database; however, Enterprise Calendars are identified by the name of the calendar rather than by a unique ID in the database. For this reason, it is possible for projects that use local base calendars to have calendar names that duplicate the names of Enterprise Calendars. The calendars saved in the Enterprise Global Template will always overwrite any local calendars that have the same names. For example, if you have an Enterprise Calendar named "24-Hour" and a project manager creates a local calendar named "24-Hour" (presuming that you have allowed local calendars), then when the project manager publishes this project to Project Server 2003, the "24-Hour" calendar in the Enterprise Global Template will overwrite the local calendar.

If you allow local calendars in your organization, it is best to use a standard naming convention to differentiate Enterprise Calendars from local calendars, such as a corporate prefix, the letter "e," or a character such as "–" or "aa" that will place the custom Enterprise Calendar at the top of the sequence; for example, "e24-Hour."

Duplicate calendar names are overwritten when you perform the following tasks:

  • Open a project from Project Server   When you open projects in Project Professional from the Project Server database, any local calendars that have the same name as an Enterprise Calendar are replaced by the Enterprise Calendar.
  • Save a project to Project Server   When you save projects to the Project Server database from Project Professional or the Enterprise Global Template, any local calendar in the project that has the same name as an Enterprise Calendar in the Enterprise Global Template is replaced by the Enterprise Calendar.
  • Import a project to Project Server   When you import projects to the Project Server database from Project Professional or the Enterprise Global Template, any local calendar in the imported project that has the same name as an Enterprise Calendar in the Enterprise Global Template is replaced by the Enterprise Calendar.
  • Consolidate projects   When you consolidate projects, any duplicate local calendar names are replaced by the Enterprise Calendar in the Enterprise Global Template. This occurs only if your organization allows local calendars or if you are working in offline mode.
