About indicators

Indicators (indicators: Small icons representing information for a task or resource that are displayed in the Indicators field. The Indicators field is located to the right of the ID field and appears in a number of tables.) represent information for a task (task: An activity that has a beginning and an end. Project plans are made up of tasks.) or resource (resources: The people, equipment, and material that are used to complete tasks in a project.) and are displayed in the indicators field (indicators field: A field containing a graphical indicator that provides information about the state of an assignment, resource, or task. For example, a check mark indicator shows that a task is completed.). The indicators field is located to the right of the ID field, and appears in a number of tables (table: A set of columns that shows specific information about tasks, resources, and assignments in a sheet view.). When you point to an indicator, additional information associated with it is displayed to remind you of important details. For example, for inserted notes (note: Explanatory text that you can attach to a task, resource, or assignment.), you'll see a notes indicator Note indicator. If you have attached a hyperlink (hyperlink: A portion of text, distinguished by a color, that contains a link to another file or a location within a file. When you click the hyperlink, a Web browser will search for and display the document that is associated with the hyperlink.) to the task or resource, you'll see a hyperlink indicator Hyperlink indicator.

Miscellaneous indicators

Note indicator The task, resource, or assignment (assignment: A specific resource that is assigned to a particular task.) has a note attached to it.

Hyperlink indicator The task, resource, or assignment has a hyperlink associated with it.

Resource leveling indicator The resource needs leveling (leveling: Resolving resource conflicts or overallocations by delaying or splitting certain tasks. When Project levels a resource, its selected assignments are distributed and rescheduled.).

Missed deadline indicator The task finishes on a date that is later than its deadline (deadline: A target date indicating when you want a task to be completed. If the deadline date passes and the task is not completed, Project displays an indicator.) date.

Constraint indicators

Inflexible constraint indicator The task has an inflexible constraint (inflexible constraint: A constraint that is inflexible because it ties a task to a date. The inflexible constraints are Must Finish On, Must Start On, Finish No Earlier Than, Finish No Later Than, Start No Earlier Than, and Start No Later Than.); inflexible constraints include the following:

  • Must Finish On (for projects scheduled from the start date).
  • Must Start On (for all projects).

Moderately flexible constraint indicator The task has a moderately flexible constraint (flexible constraint: A constraint that is flexible and does not tie a task to a single date. Flexible constraints are As Soon As Possible, As Late As Possible, Finish No Earlier Than, Finish No Later Than, Start No Earlier Than, and Start No Later Than.); moderately flexible constraints include the following:

  • Finish No Earlier Than (for projects scheduled from the start date).
  • Finish No Later Than (for projects scheduled from the finish date).
  • Start No Earlier Than (for projects scheduled from the start date).
  • Start No Later Than (for projects scheduled from the finish date).

Unscheduled or uncompleted task indicator The task has not been scheduled or completed within the constraint's time frame.

Task type indicators

Recurring task indicator The task is a recurring task (recurring task: A task that occurs repeatedly during the course of a project. For example, you might define the weekly status meeting as a recurring task.).

Completed task indicator The task is complete.

Inserted project indicator The task is an inserted project (inserted project: A project file consolidated into another project file [the master project]. Also called a subproject. The inserted project appears as a summary task in the master project.).

Read-only inserted project indicator The task is an inserted project that is read-only.

Already inserted project indicator This project has already been inserted into this project or another master project (master project: A project containing other projects [known as inserted projects or subprojects]. Also called a consolidated project.).

Calendared task indicator The task has a calendar (calendar: The scheduling mechanism that determines working time for resources and tasks. Project uses four types of calendars: the base calendar, project calendar, resource calendar, and task calendar.) applied to it.

Task with non-intersecting task and resource calendars The task has non-intersecting task and resource calendars.

Workgroup indicators

Assigned task, but resource not confirmed The task has been assigned, but the resource has not yet confirmed.

Changed task, inform resource The task has changed, and the resource should be informed.

Status requested, but no response from resource A status of the task has been requested, but the resource has not yet responded.

Contour indicators

Back-loaded contour work assignment The work of the assignment is distributed using a back-loaded contour (contour: The shape of how scheduled work for an assignment is distributed across time. Use a contour to control how Project schedules the work of a resource. Contour examples include flat, back-loaded, front-loaded, bell, turtle, and more.).

Bell contour work assignment The work of the assignment is distributed using a bell contour.

Double-peak contour work assignment The work of the assignment is distributed using a double-peak contour.

Early-peak contour work assignment The work of the assignment is distributed using an early-peak contour.

Edited contour work assignment The work of the assignment is distributed using an edited contour.

Front-loaded contour work assignment The work of the assignment is distributed using a front-loaded contour.

Late-peak contour work assignment The work of the assignment is distributed using a late-peak contour.

Turtle contour work assignment The work of the assignment is distributed using a turtle contour.
