Identify resources with specialized skills

You can associate resources with their skill set (skill set: A particular resource's skills.) and skill levels. With Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003 and Microsoft Office Project Server 2003, you use an enterprise resource outline code (outline codes: Custom tags you define for tasks or resources that allow you to show a hierarchy of the tasks in your project that is different from WBS codes or outline numbers. You can create up to 10 sets of custom outline codes in your project.) set up by your server administrator (server administrator: An individual responsible for setting up fields, views, and reports for an organization and setting up and maintaining the server and server software.) that reflects the skills and skill levels identified for your enterprise. When resources are associated with their skills, you can use resource substitution as well as simple filters (filter: Specifies which task or resource information should be displayed or highlighted in a view. For example, when you apply the Critical filter, only critical tasks are displayed.) to find resources with the skills you need.

  1. On the View menu, click Resource Sheet.
  2. Click the field to the right of where you want to insert a field.
  3. On the Insert menu, click Column.
  4. In the Field name box, click the name of the enterprise resource outline code that has been set up. By default, these custom field names are preceded by the word "Enterprise," although they might have been changed to a descriptive name. Check with your server administrator to learn which custom outline codes have been set up for your organization.
  5. For each resource, enter the skills information in the new outline code field.

Note  You can also create generic resources (generic resources: Placeholder resources that are used to specify the skills required for a specific task.) and associate them with specific skills. When you run the Resource Substitution Wizard, Microsoft Office Project 2003 finds actual resources who match the skills of your generic resources so you can add them to the project team.
