Identify materials with a single supplier

Any material resource (material resource: The supplies or other consumable items that are used to complete tasks in a project.) for which you have only a single supplier (supplier: A contractor, vendor, or other agency that supplies a material, product, or service that is required to complete a project.) carries potential risks. Even the most reliable suppliers might experience scarcities, price increases, or distribution problems. By identifying materials with single-source suppliers, you can plan for risk by arranging for substitute materials or backup suppliers. You can add and complete a custom field (field: A location in a sheet, form, or chart that contains a specific kind of information about a task, resource, or assignment. For example, in a sheet, each column is a field. In a form, a field is a named box or a place in a column.) to contain supplier information. You can then filter, sort, or group on this field to plan for risk.

  1. On the View menu, click Resource Sheet.
  2. Click the field to the right of where you want to insert another field.
  3. On the Insert menu, click Column.
  4. In the Field name box, click a text field, such as Text1 or Flag1.
  5. In the Title box, type a name such as Single Source, and then click OK.
  6. For each material that has a single supplier, enter yes in the Single Source field.
  7. Click AutoFilter Button image.

When AutoFilters (AutoFilter: A way to filter information in a field [column]. By default, AutoFilters are off, but you can turn them on by clicking AutoFilter. Selecting a filter does not delete any information from your project; it only filters it from your view.) are on, an arrow is displayed to the right of each field heading.

  8. Click the AutoFilter arrow in the Single Source field heading, and then click yes. You can also sort or group the view by your new field.
