View and update tasks with external dependencies
An external dependency (external dependency: A relationship in which the start or finish date of a task depends on a task in another project.) can be anything from a task in another Microsoft Office Project 2003 plan to a deliverable (deliverable: A tangible and measurable result, outcome, or item that must be produced to complete a project or part of a project. Typically, the project team and project stakeholders agree on project deliverables before the project begins.) or other dependency that exists outside of any project plan.
To learn more about linking tasks in order to create dependencies between projects, see the related links in the See Also box, which is visible when you are connected to the Internet. Quickly view and update tasks that are dependent on tasks in other Project plans

to turn them off. When AutoFilters are on, an arrow is displayed to the right of each field heading. Turning off AutoFilters ensures that all tasks with estimated durations are displayed. - On the Tools menu, click Links Between Projects.

- To see a list of tasks that are linked to external successor tasks, click the External Successors tab.
- Look in the Differences column for changes to external predecessors that affect the successor task or tasks in your project.
Differences usually include a new start or finish date for the external predecessor or external successor, typically the result of a changed duration, constraint, tracked progress, and so on. Task name changes are also shown in the Differences column.
- Review and accept changes to external links.
- To selectively accept changes to external predecessors, in the Task column, select each external predecessor or successor with changes that you want to accept, and then click Accept.
- To accept all changes, click All.
Notes - If you want to hide external tasks, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the View tab. Clear the Show external successors and the Show external predecessors check boxes.
- Be careful to remember which changes you do not accept, because your project will not be synchronized with the external file containing the update you reject.
- You cannot undo acceptance of the changes after you click OK, but you are ensured that the project is synchronized with all external files.

By default, you are notified if data in an externally linked project has changed. The external predecessors, external successors, and impacts to your schedule (schedule: The timing and sequence of tasks within a project. A schedule consists mainly of tasks, task dependencies, durations, constraints, and time-oriented project information.) are displayed when you open a plan with external links, and you can choose to accept any or all changes. If you do not want to be notified of such changes, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the View tab. Under Cross project linking options for, clear the Show Links Between Projects dialog on open check box. To automatically accept changes each time you open the plan, select the Automatically accept new external data check box.
- In a project containing external dependencies (external dependency: A relationship in which the start or finish date of a task depends on a task in another project.), you can open the other projects and view these dependencies only if each of the linked projects is saved as the same version (version: The default version created when saving a project in Project Server is "Published." Other version names may be defined by your organization. It is next to the project name in the Open from Microsoft Project Server dialog box.) on the enterprise server. When you save projects to the enterprise server (including subprojects that have been inserted into master projects), the default version is named "Published." If you cannot open a subproject or project containing an external dependency, you may need to save the associated projects as the same version. To find a project's version, on the File menu, click Open. Look in the Version column for the project's version.
