Set up Project Online

As soon as you have purchased Project Online, a new Project Web App site is automatically created for you. You may decide that you want to enable Project Web App on an existing SharePoint Online site, or you may want to set up a second Project Web App site.

Tip    Enabling Project Web App on an existing site collection allows you to leverage the existing permissions and users that you have already established.

Enable Project Web App on an existing SharePoint Online site

Each SharePoint Online site has one or more “site collections.” A site collection is a hierarchical set of sites that you can manage individually or as a group. The sites in a site collection share administration settings, navigation, and other features such as permissions.

To enable Project Web App on an existing site collection:

  1. Log on to the Microsoft Office 365 portal site.

Tip    If you’re not sure of your User ID, refer to the ‘Get Started with Microsoft Office 365’ email message that includes your User ID and other information about your account.

  1. On the top right portion of the page, in the blue bar, click Admin, and then click Project. This takes you to the Site Collections list in the SharePoint admin center.
  2. Hover over the URL for the site collection where you want to enable Project Web App, and then select the check box that appears to the left of the URL.
  3. Click Project Web App on the ribbon, and then click Add.
  4. On the dialog box that appears, click Enable if you are sure that you want to add Project Web App to the site collection.

Note    After enabling Project Web App on your existing site collection, be sure to allow for a waiting period of approximately 15 minutes before you begin using your site, so that the Project Web App features can finish installing.

Set up an additional Project Web App site

You may decide that you want to set up an additional Project Web App site, to manage projects in a separate environment from your first Project Web App site. You can do this by creating another site collection with Project Web App.

To set up another Project Web App site:

  2. On the ribbon, click New, and then click Private Site Collection with Project Web App.
  3. Type a name for the new site collection in the Title box.
  4. Select the web site where you want to create the site collection in the Public Website Address list, and then type the part of the URL that points directly to the site collection in the box that follows.

For example, select https://contoso.microsoftonline.com from the Public Website Address list, and then type pwa in the box next to the address. The address for the site collection will be https://contoso.microsoftonline.com/pwa.

  1. Enter the name of the administrator for the site collection in the Administrator box.
  2. Enter the maximum amount of memory you want to dedicate to storage for Project Web App in the Storage Quota box. The recommendation is at least 200 MB. This figure affects performance.
  3. Enter the maximum number of server resources you want to use in Project Web App in the Server Resource Quota box. The recommendation is at least 300 server resources. This figure affects performance.
  4. Click OK to create the site collection, with Project Web App enabled.

Note    After setting up the Project Web App site, be sure to allow for a waiting period of approximately 15 minutes before you begin using your site, so that the site features can finish installing.
