Use the Interface tab in the Options dialog box to control the Project Guide and the way that Microsoft Office Project responds to changes to task information. You can:

  • Control whether you get feedback indicators and popup menus when you make certain changes to tasks, resources, or assignments.
  • Specify whether you want to display and use the Project Guide.
  • Indicate whether you're using the default Project Guide or a custom Project Guide developed by your organization.

ShowFeedback indicator settings

Use the Show indicators and Option buttons for section to set options for displaying feedback indicators and popup menus when certain changes are made to assignments, work, duration, start dates, and so on. When you make certain changes to your project, can display feedback regarding the impact of your change and provide options in a popup menu that help you clarify what you're really trying to accomplish.

The feedback indicator is usually a small triangle in the corner of the affected field. If you rest your mouse pointer over the field, the information indicator Information indicator appears next to the field. Click the indicator, and a popup menu displays choices for clarifying your actions. Click the option that reflects your intention.

Resource assignments     Specifies that the feedback triangle should appear in a corner of a field if you assign additional resources to a task that already has resources assigned. This can appear in the Resource Name field or the Task Name field, depending on where you made the change. You could then click the information indicator to display the popup menu that provides options regarding the assignment. Clear this check box if you never want to see feedback options when you assign additional resources. By default, this check box is selected.

Edits to start and finish dates     Specifies that the feedback triangle should appear in a corner of a Task Name field if you change the task's start date or finish date. You could then click the information indicator to display the popup menu that provides options regarding the date change. Clear this check box if you never want to see feedback options when you change a start or finish date. By default, this check box is selected.

Edits to work, units, or duration     Specifies that the feedback triangle should appear in a corner of the Duration field or the Task Name field if you change a task's work, units, or duration. You could then click the information indicator to display the popup menu that provides options regarding the change. Clear this check box if you never want to see feedback options when you change work, units, or duration. By default, this check box is selected.

Deletions in the Name column     Specifies that the delete indicator Button image should appear in the Indicators field if you delete text in the Task Name or Resource Name field. You could then click the delete indicator to display the popup menu that provides options for deleting the task name or the entire task. Clear this check box if you never want to see the delete indicator when you delete text in the Task Name or Resource Name field. By default, this check box is selected.

ShowUser interface settings

Use the User Interface section to determine how you want to handle Organizer items. You can use the Organizer to copy project elements (including fields, groups, calendars, toolbars, maps, forms, tables, filters, views, reports, and modules) between the global file and the active project file, or between two project files. Each element has a physical name, which may vary between projects, and an internal ID, which is the same across all projects. This can be helpful when working with multiple languages or custom views.

Use internal IDs to match different-language or renamed Organizer items between projects     Select this check box to match project elements in the Organizer by using each element’s internal ID. By selecting this check box, you ignore the physical element names, as they may differ between projects.

ShowProject Guide settings

Use the Project Guide settings section to set your preferences for the appearance and content of the side pane containing the Project Guide. The Project Guide provides explanations, tasks, and controls to help you create and manage a project.

Display Project Guide     Displays the side pane containing the Project Guide. Clear the check box to close the side pane and have it remain closed the next time you open a project. This is a global setting, applying to all your projects. By default, this check box is selected.

Project Guide Functionality and Layout Page     Specifies whether the side pane displays the Project default main page or a custom page your organization has developed.

ShowProject Guide page options

Use Microsoft Office Project's default page     Specifies that the side pane displays the Project default main page. By default, this option is selected.

Use a custom page     Specifies that the side pane displays a custom page your organization has developed. When you select this option, the URL box and Browse button appear.

URL     Enter the Web address (Uniform Resource Locator) where the custom Web page for Project Guide is located.

Browse    Opens the Browse dialog box, which you can use to locate the file containing your custom Web page to be used for the Project Guide.

Project Guide Content     Specifies whether the side pane displays the Project Guide content that comes with Project or custom content that your organization has developed.

ShowProject Guide content options

Use Microsoft Office Project's default content    Specifies that the side pane displays the Project default content. This option is selected by default.

Use custom content     Specifies that the side pane displays custom content that your organization has developed. When you select this option, the XML file for custom content box and Browse button appear.

XML file for custom content     Enter the path and file name containing your custom content for the Project Guide.

Browse    Opens the Browse dialog box, which you can use to locate the file containing your custom content for the Project Guide.

Set as Default     The custom Project Guide options are local settings, and apply only to the active project. If you want to make these settings the global default for all new projects, click the Set as Default button.
