Group By Summary fields

The Group By Summary field indicates whether this row in the task or resource sheet is the summary row for tasks or resources grouped by a particular category. There can be multiple levels of groupings, for example, groupings by priority (priority: An indication of a task's importance and availability for leveling [that is, resolving resource conflicts or overallocations by delaying or splitting certain tasks]. Tasks with the lowest priority are delayed or split first.) within phases (phase: A group of related tasks that completes a major step in a project.), or groupings by standard rate within resource type (work resource (work resource: People and equipment resources that perform work to accomplish a task. Work resources consume time [hours or days] to accomplish tasks.) or material resource (material resource: The supplies or other consumable items that are used to complete tasks in a project.)).

There are several categories of Group By Summary fields. Learn more about field categories.

Data Type    Yes/No (Yes/No field: A type of field with content set to either Yes or No; also known as a Boolean field or a True/False field. For example, the Recurring field indicates whether the task is a recurring task.)

ShowGroup By Summary (task field)

Entry Type    Calculated (calculated field: A field in which the value is determined by Project based on information in other fields. Project may recalculate the value automatically or when you specify, depending on your choice of calculation settings.)

How Calculated    If the row is the group summary, this field is set to Yes. If the row is a task within the grouping, this field is set to No.

Best Uses    The main use of this field is for programming custom applications. Add the Group By Summary field to a task sheet when you have grouped tasks in a particular way and you want to sort or filter the tasks. The Group By Summary field shows whether the row, outside of its normal grouped context, is a summary row or a task row.

Example    You generally like to view your project grouped by start date and then by resource name. However, when you filter for critical tasks, the grouping summary rows are included with the filter if any of the tasks within the grouping are critical tasks. Because you want to see clearly whether a row is a grouping summary row, you add the Group By Summary field to the task sheet.

Remarks    The cells of grouping summary rows are also highlighted in different colors to show the level of grouping.

Task information for the group is rolled up into the group summary row. Such information includes rolled-up costs, start dates, finish dates, priority, and work.

How Calculated    If the row is the group summary, this field is set to Yes. If the row is a resource within the grouping, this field is set to No.
