Goal: Track resource progress

The most effective way to gauge the progress of resources' work on a project is to balance their workloads and track progress on tasks. You can manage the tracking process with e-mail messages, on an intranet (intranet: Any network that provides similar services within an organization to those provided by the Internet. An organization's intranet may or may not be connected to the Internet; its information might be distributed only within the company.) or the Internet (Internet: A worldwide network of thousands of smaller computer networks and millions of commercial, educational, government, and personal computers. Also known as the World Wide Web [WWW].), or by gathering information from resources in person and manually entering actual data. Depending on the level of detail that you need in order to manage your project effectively, you can update the entire schedule at specific dates, as tasks are completed, or as tasks progress.

number 1 Use Project Server to record costs     If you are using Microsoft Office Project Server 2007, your team members provide task information using Microsoft Office Project Web Access. You can easily incorporate that task status information directly into the project plan.

Show Track work at the task level

  • Update work on a project to indicate the current actual start and finish dates, actual work, actual duration, remaining duration, percent complete, and percent work complete. Be aware, however, that percent complete, actual duration, and remaining duration are interlocking quantities; updating one of them might cause the values of the others to change.

Show Track work at the assignment level

Click all of the following that apply:

  • Enter costs for resources to calculate the costs for resources based upon a number of factors and resource types.
  • Update work on a project to indicate the current actual start and finish dates, actual work, actual duration, remaining duration, percent complete, and percent work complete. Be aware, however, that percent complete, actual duration, and remaining duration are interlocking quantities; updating one of them might cause the values of the others to change.
  • Change the timephased information displayed in the usage views to view data over specific time periods. This can be helpful when you have an especially tight deadline or budget. To track work at a very detailed level, update the amount of actual work performed by each resource during a time interval you specify — for example, per day.
