Add bullets or numbering to text

  1. Select the lines of text that you want to add bullets or numbering to.
  2. On the Formatting toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, click Customize on the Tools menu, and then click the Toolbars tab.), click Bullets Button image or Numbering Button image.

Notes

  • To create an indented (subordinate) list within the list, place the insertion point at the start of the line you want to indent and either press the TAB key or, on the Formatting toolbar, click Increase Indent Button image.
  • If you want to move text back to a less indented level in the list, either press SHIFT+TAB or, on the Formatting toolbar, click Decrease Indent Button image.
  • To add bullets in the middle of a line of text, place the insertion point where you want the bullets to appear, and then on the Insert menu, click Symbol. In the Symbols dialog box, select the bullet symbol, and then click Insert once for each bullet you want to insert. Click Close to close the Symbols dialog box.

Most fonts include a bullet symbol. If the font you're using does not, in the Symbols dialog box, click the Font arrow and select another font, such as Arial.

  • You can start a numbered list by typing. First, press BACKSPACE to remove the bullet at the beginning of the line. Then, type the number— a one (1), letter A or a, or roman numeral one (I or i) followed by a period or closing parenthesis, and then a space. Type the text and press ENTER to start a new line. The numbering continues automatically.
