Reaching the limit of masters in a presentation

Each time you apply a new design template (design template: A file that contains the styles in a presentation, including the type and size of bullets and fonts; placeholder sizes and positions; background design and fill color schemes; and a slide master and optional title master.), a slide master (slide master: The slide that stores information about the design template applied, including font styles, placeholder sizes and positions, background design, and color schemes.) and title master (title master: The slide that stores information from the design template pertaining to styles on title slides, including placeholder sizes and positions, background design, and color schemes.) for that template are added to your presentation. Depending on the following factors, you can reach a limit for the number of masters allowed in a presentation.

  • Your administrator may have set a limit to the number of masters you can add.
  • The option to use multiple masters may be turned off. This option is on the Tools menu, in the Options dialog box.

If you're merging presentations, the combined total of masters for the merged presentation might exceed a limit that's been set in either of the above ways.

To solve the problem, try the following:

  • If the limit has been set by your administrator due to corporate policy, see your administrator about changing the limit.
  • To turn the multiple masters option on:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. On the Edit tab, under Disable new features, clear the Multiple masters check box.
  • To delete some masters from the current or merged presentation:
    1. On the View menu, point to Master, and then click Slide Master.
    2. In the thumbnails on the left, click the master you want to delete.
    3. On the Slide Master View toolbar, click Delete Master Button image.
